Laschet's residual risk, Söders last chance: CSU boss relies on a new strategy when it comes to K questions - but an exit plan is in place

The coup from above did not take place in the CDU - now Söder is relying on the uprising of the CDU base against Laschet.

But he also has his exit strategy for a long time.

A comment by Merkur editor-in-chief Georg Anastasiadis.

Munich - There are only two ways for Markus Söder to enter the Chancellery.

Both require a coup by the CDU against their boss Armin Laschet.

The party let the first opportunity for a revolt from above slip by on Monday: in the Presidium, the grandees stood surprisingly unanimously behind Laschet;

not even Norbert Röttgen dared to object.

The Munich regent now has the hope of a rebellion from below, from the CDU base.

But time is running out for that too: the time window closes next Sunday at the latest, before the Greens present their candidate for chancellor (rather: the candidate).

Because at least the embarrassment of being the very last to name their top candidate, the Panic Union wants to spare itself.

Söder or Laschet?

The parliamentary group is the last chance for the CSU boss

So far, a good 60 CDU members, the Berlin capital CDU and the Düsseldorf-Lierenfeld branch have shown a desire for revolution in Laschetland.

That is - still - not enough.

The fact that Söder briefly ignited the possibility of a member survey on Monday, but also put out the fire again immediately, shows that he is trying with all his might to maintain the pressure before his visit to the parliamentary group on Tuesday.

A Söder does not give in so quickly, even the courted bride may not be willing.

The faction remains Laschet's residual risk.

And Söder's last chance.

Söder or Laschet?

Clever exit strategy from the Bavarian Prime Minister

If there is no change in mood in favor of Bayern, Söder's exit strategy applies: He promised on Sunday that he would not be “an ostrich”, that is, he would not drive the confrontation to extremes and let Laschet go first if the CDU had him outright wool.

That was clever.

Because both alternatives - giving up without a fight and the forced candidacy with the crowbar - would mean the end of Söder's special political role: In the first case, it would have been said that Söder is a player who pinches when it matters.

And in the second case?

He would be a candidate - but not chancellor because of the injuries in the Union.
