Violent protests erupted against US police racism and violence after police killed an African-American youth by shooting him in a suburb of Minneapolis, the largest city in Minnesota, where a policeman is currently being tried for the murder of African-American George Floyd last May.
According to Agence France-Presse that hundreds of protesters gathered outside a police station in the Brooklyn Center northwest of Minneapolis, demanding justice for police forces to fire bullets, tear gas and sound bombs towards them.
In front of the crowd of protesters, Katie Wright, the mother of the 20-year-old boy who was killed by the police, said that he called her to inform her that he had been arrested by the police, indicating that she heard the security forces asking her son to leave his cell phone before someone ended the call and after a short time his girlfriend told her that he He was shot dead.
For its part, the Minnesota Criminal Arrest Office confirmed that it was investigating a shooting incident linked to the police in the Brooklyn Center, but refused to identify the victim.
A statement from the Brooklyn Center Police Department also indicated that a passenger who was accompanied by Wright in the car was shot and taken to a hospital on the spot.
In turn, Brooklyn Mayor Mike Elliott described the shooting as "tragic" and said on Twitter: "We ask the protesters to maintain peace and not to deal with peaceful protests by force."
The shooting incident comes as the trial of former policeman Dered Chauven, accused of killing Floyd, continues. This incident, which sparked international outrage, led to widespread protests for several months in the United States against racism and police violence.
