Annalena Baerbock or Robert Habeck - who should lead the Greens as a candidate for chancellor in the federal election?

The Federal Executive Committee wants to present its proposal on April 19, and the final decision will be made by the Green Party Congress in mid-June.

So far, Baerbock and Habeck have been fighting a power struggle without a struggle, it's so harmonious with the Greens.

Most recently, however, in an interview with SPIEGEL, Baerbock made it clear how difficult it is to achieve demonstrative harmony at times: "I don't think it is difficult for any of us to say: You are the right person," said the party leader.

A possible waiver of the candidacy for chancellor in favor of her colleague would still be "a little stab in the heart in the end."

Maybe the decision won't hurt Baerbock at all in the end.

Because the SPIEGEL survey on the green K question shows: Annalena Baerbock has massively caught up in the race with Robert Habeck.

In the case of the Green supporters, she is even well ahead of her co-chair.

Overall, more voters can imagine Robert Habeck as a green candidate for Chancellor: 32 percent would prefer him to Annalena Baerbock, for whom 25 percent were in favor.

According to the survey by the polling institute Civey, however, the majority is still undecided.

In the course of time it becomes clear that Baerbock has gained approval, while Habeck has lost.

In 2019, just eleven percent of citizens thought Baerbock was the better candidate.

At that time, 42 percent were in favor of Habeck.

With the Greens voters, Baerbock is ahead

Baerbock's gain in popularity is even more pronounced among greens sympathizers.

Only a fifth are still undecided, and contrary to the overall result, Baerbock is clearly in the lead here.

45 percent of the potential Green voters favor her as a candidate for chancellor, 35 percent want Habeck.

The voters of all other parties consistently see Habeck as the more suitable applicant for the Chancellery - but a large proportion of them are undecided.

In the SPIEGEL Sunday issue, the Greens had recently significantly narrowed the gap to the Union.

The CDU and CSU are therefore just under 30 percent, the Greens around 23 percent.
