Business IT specialists work at the interface between IT and project management.

They generate data to make company decisions easier, help introduce and maintain software programs, or test new IT applications for the company.

Is business informatics right for me?

The self-test of the University of Leipzig helps with the decision.

Melanie Miedl is 27 years old and studied

business informatics and digital media

at the

Stuttgart

Media University.

She explains why she failed two exams in the first semester and what helped her to get through.

The decision for business informatics

"The idea of later working at the interface between business and IT convinced me."

Graduate Melanie Miedl

“After leaving school, I trained as a wholesale and foreign trade clerk.

At some point, however, I asked myself the question: 'Was that all?' At a vocational college, I made up my advanced technical college certificate and came into contact with IT for the first time - the subject was compulsory there and immediately fascinated me.

I've always had an affinity for technology and that's how I understood the connections for the first time.

By chance I was talking to a friend who was studying business informatics and digital media at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences.

She talked so vividly about her studies that I was immediately enthusiastic about it.

I found out more on the university's website - I was won over by the idea of later working at the interface between business and computer science.

I was already familiar with the economic part because of my training, but at the same time I found the technical part new and exciting. "

Content and structure of the course

"It's like playing sports, you get better with regular exercise."

Graduate Melanie Miedl

“During the first semester I thought, 'It's going very well.' But then the exams came and I failed two.

Today I know: I only learned from the exercises with the summaries and did not practice the tasks over and over again.

It's like doing sports, you get better with regular exercise.

I had some self-doubts and didn't know whether to continue with my studies.

Fortunately, I persevered: In the course of my studies and through my student jobs, I noticed how much I enjoy technology.

What helped me was the exchange with other fellow students.

Learning as much as possible with them has paid off: You can better recognize your own gaps in knowledge.

For example, we had a funky Java course in which the older students sat down with freshmen to go through the basics again.

At such informal meetings it is simply easier to ask questions - even several times. "

»At the beginning you deal with different programming languages, data science, software engineering, but also accounting as well as marketing and organization.

During the course of our studies, we were able to focus more on economics or IT, but we always needed enough credit points from both areas.

I recommend taking a close look at the focus areas of the respective university before starting your studies, they can be quite different.

Because I already had a lot of basic business knowledge, I concentrated on IT instead.

In the internship semester, I did an internship in a publishing house.

I supported the project manager in introducing a new customer management system.

The highlight of my studies was certainly my semester abroad in Norway, in that half year I learned a lot about information security.

On the other hand, I found our IT project in Stuttgart difficult.

That ran for several weeks and the five of us had to set up a functional program: We developed a software for contact management with a three-layer architecture - including user interface, database and application level.

That was very demanding.

The IT project only counted as preliminary work for an oral exam.

If it hadn't worked properly, it shouldn't have been completed in the first place.

Fortunately, it worked out well for us. "

Career prospects after graduation

"I now work for a large tax consultancy and implement digital projects there."

Graduate Melanie Miedl

»I advise everyone to look for working student jobs during their studies.

This is the best way to find out where you want to work later - from developer to project manager, everything is possible.

For example, I was able to get to know the areas of online marketing and data governance myself.

As a working student at a car company, I helped to check data from leasing contracts and feed it into the software.

I now work for a large tax consultancy, where I implement digital projects together with the team: I choose the right software for the employees, coordinate with external service providers and also set up a central database, a data warehouse.

I work exactly at the interface between core business and IT - just as I had imagined at the beginning of my studies. "
