Tennessee high school shooting leaves at least one dead and one cop injured

The attack occurred at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville. A suspect was arrested and will be questioned by the police. The school facilities have been declared safe by the authorities.


At least one person was killed and a police officer injured after a shooting at a high school in Tennessee on Monday, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville, the city police department detailed.

Police reported the shooting around 4:00 pm local time, and reported shortly after that a reunification site had been established at a nearby baseball field.

When Knoxville police officers arrived at the school after receiving reports of a gunman on the premises,

a male subject immediately opened fire on them

, authorities said.

An officer was injured in the shooting and was transported to UT Medical Center with injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene

, while another was arrested and will be questioned by the police.

As far as is known, there were no other injuries in the incident.

"School facilities have been secured and students who were not involved in the incident have been released to their families," said Bob Thomas, superintendent of the Knox County School District.

In another tweet, Thomas added that authorities were gathering information on "this tragic situation" and would provide additional information later.
