Demonstrators hold banners during a protest against the military coup in Mandalay, Myanmar, on April 11.

Since the coup d'état perpetrated by the Myanmar Army on February 1, the situation in the Asian country has deteriorated to unacceptable extremes.

The death of more than 80 protesters between Thursday and Friday at the hands of the Police and the Army in a town northeast of Yangon, the country's commercial capital, is just the latest episode in a spiral of open violence against the population. with which the regime intends to end the massive protests that demand democracy.

A sterile violent strategy that brings the Asian country closer and closer to a civil war.

This new massacre is in addition to the incessant killings of protesters, the massive arrests of opponents, artists and informants who refuse to accept the dictatorship, the imprisonment or arrest of the democratically elected Government and a brutal repression on all fronts that the Junta is exercising military.

Neither international condemnation nor sanctions imposed by democratic countries can reverse this path.

Of course they are necessary, but it is not advisable to be naive about their real effectiveness as long as the new Burmese regime continues to count on the attitude, at least passive, of China and Russia.

In this sense, the international spokesman for the self-proclaimed clandestine civilian government is accurate when he assures in an interview with EL PAÍS that Beijing and Moscow could change the dramatic situation "with a single call."

China is Myanmar's main trading partner and for the past decade has been one of its main suppliers of weapons.

Officially, the Beijing regime - practically the only international support for the military dictatorship that existed from 1962 until the arrival of democracy in 2011 - has ensured that it does not want to interfere in an internal affair, which apparently amounts to giving up its tremendous influence over the military junta and, in fact, endorse their practices.

Russia, on the other hand, is embarrassingly taking advantage of the situation to gain projection in the region and this is demonstrated by the quick visit of its Deputy Minister of Defense.

The high representative of the EU, Josep Borrell, yesterday denounced the action of China and Russia to prevent the UN Security Council from acting in this crisis, and pointed out that the EU is preparing to impose new sanctions to hit companies linked to the military.

These words and actions are going in the right direction.

But there is nothing to suggest that Beijing and Moscow are turning and are used to stop the military drift in Myanmar.

Even so, you must not give up and, among other things, make sure that this attitude weighs heavily on your moral account and on the eyes of Burmese people who see this situation with horror.

One day I hope they can take their toll on Beijing and Moscow.
