Clashes broke out last night (Monday) between protesters and police in the state of Minnesota in the United States after a black driver was shot to death by police in the city of Brooklyn Center.
The driver was identified as 20-year-old Donta Wright.
A curfew was imposed at night in the city, and residents were required to stay in their homes.
Brooklyn Center is near Minneapolis, where George Floyd's satirical murder trial is taking place.
Hundreds of protesters named Donta Wright gathered outside police headquarters in the city, located a few miles north of Minneapolis.
Police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the demonstrators, who threw stones at two police, and several businesses were looted.
Minnesota National Guard forces, already deployed in Minneapolis ahead of Floyd's trial, were sent to Brooklyn.
The mayor ordered the curfew after the clashes.
"We want to make sure everyone is safe. Please take care of yourself and go home," tweeted Mayor Mike Elliott, who described the incident as "tragic."
Minnesota Gov. Tim Waltz said he was "following the situation closely" and that he was praying for Wright's family: "Our state is mourning the death of another black man by law enforcement."
All the schools, programs and various activities in the city have been shut down for today.
According to local police, officers arrested a driver after committing a traffic offense, and discovered that there was a arrest warrant against him.
Police said they tried to stop him, but he got back in his car and then one of the officers opened fire at him.
He continued driving until he collided with another car, and his death was determined at the scene.
Another passenger in the car was injured, but she is not in danger of death.
Police said police officers involved in the incident were equipped with body cameras, and the dashboard cameras of the vehicles were also activated.
Wright's mother, Katie, said he called her after officers arrested him, saying his traffic offense was "air purifiers that hung in his rearview mirror."
According to her, clashes followed and then the conversation was interrupted.
"A minute later, I called and his girlfriend, who was traveling in the car, answered and said she was shot and that my son was lying there lifeless," the mother added.
She said police left his body on the ground.
"No one told us anything. No one spoke to us, I said please, lift my son off the ground."
