Unlike other medical and nursing staff, veterinarians are not preferably vaccinated against the coronavirus.

A mistake, say two veterinarians from the Ebersberg district.

Ebersberg / Forstinning

- Peter Dirscherl, a veterinarian from Forstinning, recently undertook a classic tailor's trip: to Ebersberg to receive his invitation to vaccinate.

"Work in a medical facility" he had specified when registering online, following a recommendation from the Veterinary Association.

Then the rejection on site: Vets are not given priority vaccination.

Dirscherl and his wife Silke, with whom he runs the practice, do not quarrel with the dutiful decision of the vaccination center, but with the fact that at least in the Ebersberg district their industry is left out.

“We're falling through the cracks,” says the 57-year-old.

The regulation is apparently not clear - the district office informs that it is itself inquiring about the matter with the Ministry of Health.

However, there is currently no prioritization for veterinarians.

Although not human patients, there is still a risk of infection in the practice

A mistake, thinks Dirscherl, who has also turned to the district office with his concern.

“I don't want to take anything away from anyone or push myself in front of them,” he emphasizes.

From his point of view, veterinarians make a contribution to maintaining the health system - "with full awareness of the potentially fatal risk of infection".

While a veterinarian does not treat human patients, pet owners are a major factor.

For proper treatment, they would often have to be in the room - to keep the animal still and to give information.

Dirscherl compares this to the situation at the pediatrician - not in terms of importance, he emphasizes, but in the way: "We have patients who cannot express themselves," he says.

In practice it is impossible to keep distances.

He is currently not making house calls because of the risk of infection.

Vets should be vaccinated as soon as possible - also to protect the often older pet owners.
