Leonardo Cazzaniga, 65, former emergency number two at Saronno hospital near Milan, was found guilty of intentional homicides against eight patients, as well as the husband and stepfather of his mistress, Laura Taroni .

He was, however, acquitted on appeal for three other murders by the Milan Assize Court.

The "

devilish lovers

", thus described by the Italian press, overdosed the cocktails of analgesics and anesthetics administered to the patients.

While their defenders invoked practices in accordance with customary palliative care, the prosecution recalled that a young woman had died in the hospital where she had been admitted for a banal dislocation of the shoulder.

Laura Taroni's husband died in June 2013, succumbing to an overdose of insulin, a substance she administered to him over a long period of time making him believe he was diabetic.

Laura Taroni, 44 years old, mother of two children, was for her part sentenced, on appeal, last February to 30 years in prison for the murder of her husband, and that of her mother in 2014. The two victims had been quickly incinerated.

Every now and then I feel like killing someone.

I need it ...

”, she said, according to police eavesdropping.

During their investigations, the carabinieri were interested in forty deaths that occurred between 2011 and 2014, each time when Dr. Cazzaniga was on duty in the hospital emergency room.

This “

black list

” also includes the name of the practitioner's own father, who died on October 20, 2013, while he was terminally hospitalized.

Incarcerated since 2016, the doctor and the nurse should both appeal in cassation.
