After the death of a black man during a police operation in the US state of Minnesota, US President Joe Biden has called for calm.
"Peaceful protest is understandable," said Biden on Monday in the White House.
But there is "absolutely no justification" for violence.
The president said the investigation into the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, north of Minneapolis, remains to be seen.
“The question is whether it was an accident or on purpose.
That still has to be clarified. "
Night curfew after riots
A policewoman shot Wright at a traffic stop on Sunday.
The incident sparked protests that also escalated into violence.
In Minneapolis and the neighboring city of Saint Paul, a nighttime curfew for the metropolitan area came into effect on Monday evening, and it should last until 6 a.m. local time Tuesday morning.
The authorities announced an increased presence of police and National Guard security forces.
There had been riots on the night from Sunday to Monday and on Monday itself.
Hundreds of demonstrators had gathered at the crime scene.
They deny the version that Wright accidentally lost his life.
When they met the police, they threw bottles and other objects, and the police responded with blunt plastic bullets.
Minneapolis is currently on trial against ex-police officer Derek Chauvin for the violent death of African American George Floyd in May last year.
Wright and Floyd died just a few miles apart.
