Unheard of since 2012. During the first three months of the year, 82.7 million computers were sold worldwide, according to Canalys.

That is to say a growth of 55% over one year.

Admittedly, at the start of 2020, the PC market was particularly sluggish.

But since then, the pandemic and teleworking have passed and with them, a tremendous boom in computer equipment needs.

Individuals and businesses have flocked to PCs to cope with the new needs associated with this particular situation.

The market was supported by sales of laptops, up 79% year on year, with 67.8 million terminals sold.

It mainly comes from individuals "but also testifies to the beginning of a recovery for the smallest companies", underlines Canalys.

In contrast, sales of desktop computers, less suited to a more nomadic lifestyle, fell 5% over the period, with only 14.8 million devices sold worldwide.

The rise is benefiting manufacturers, with double-digit growth for the top five in the ranking.

But it was Apple that made the most impressive progress, with sales growth of 105% over the period and 6.6 million Macs sold.

Number four in the market, it is still far from the top three.

Lenovo (+ 60%) has sold 20.4 million PCs, HP (+ 64.4%), 19.2 million and Dell (+23.4), 12.9 million.

The Top 5 is completed by Acer, which shows an 82% growth in sales, with 5.6 million computers sold.

The PC market is expected to continue its momentum, despite the supply challenges it faces, particularly due to tensions in the semiconductor industry.
