  • Martin Morczinietz is going into his fourth season after returning to his hometown club.

  • The goalkeeper played during his career in the DEL (Hanover, Augsburg), the DEL 2 (Bietigheim, Bremerhaven) and the Oberliga (Klostersee, Sonthofen).

  • Johanna May was trained in the junior staff at EC Bad Tölz and has already worked for the River Rats for the past two years.

Geretsried - Those responsible for the ice hockey Bayern league team ESC Geretsried caught the rejection of David Albanese about three weeks ago on the wrong foot.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper, who has been a reliable supporter of the River Rats defense since the 2012/13 season, will end his career for professional and family reasons (we reported).

So what to do

Hire a new keeper or trust the previous staff?

Peter Holdschik opted for the latter variant.

"We are very happy that Martin Morczinietz and Johanna May are available to us for the coming Ice Age", says the 2nd chairman.

With the 36-year-old Morczinietz they have a first-class goalkeeper at their disposal, "who is highly motivated and longs for the new season".

With his great experience he will also be of help to Johanna May.

Holdschik, in any case, thinks very highly of the 20-year-old: “It's Johanna's turn now and will get her well-deserved chance.

She is a talented, hardworking and reliable goalkeeper who needs to take the next step in the senior sector now. "

Martin Morczinietz has had a long and successful ice hockey career behind him.

The son of the former ESC trainer Robert Morczinietz started with the Geretsried offspring, played among other things in the youth national team.

In 1999 he got his first assignments in the men's division, at that time in the major league.

Later, the younger brother of former national player Andreas Morczinietz was under contract with the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven (DEL2) and the DEL clubs Hannover Scorpions and Augsburg Panther, among others.

After further seasons with the Bietigheim Steelers (DEL2), the EHC Klostersee (Oberliga) and the ERC Sonthofen (Oberliga), he returned to Geretsried in 2017.

There, the employee at the Employment Agency and Family Father has been an integral part of the River Rats for five years and has taken turns with David Albanese in the ESC box.

“Martin rarely gets upset between the posts.

With his great experience and strong positional play, he makes it difficult for any attacker to find a suitable gap when the game is closed ”, praised press spokesman Tom Kinzl.

The proud record of the keeper: He won the DEL2 championship with Bietigheim in 2008/09 and the DEB Cup with the Steelers in 2011/12.

In total, he made 19 appearances in the DEL, 71 in the DEL2 and 188 in the Oberliga, making him one of the most successful Geretsrieder ice hockey players ever.

In the future, Morczinietz will receive support from Johanna May - “a young, highly motivated and very talented person”, as Kinzl writes.

The younger sister of River Rats center forward Benedikt May completed her goalkeeping training until the 2018/10 season, mostly in the junior division of EC Bad Tölz.

Also assignments in the DNL and the U18 national team are in her vita.

Originally planned for the Geretsrieder U20, Johanna May has played in the first team several times in recent years.

Kinzl: "Here she convinced with concentrated performance and a professional appearance."
