VAR arrives in Argentine football, why is it the only major league that has not adopted it yet?

The AFA has been working on its implementation for two years and invested 1,500,000 dollars, but the leaders never gave it the endorsement. It starts after the Copa América.

Federico Beligoy's

phrase

is a testament to the need and urgency that technology means.

"The VAR (Video of Referee Assistance) would have invited him to review the play and surely, as we all think, the sanction would have changed," said the National Refereeing Director.

He did it the same night in which

Mauro Vigliano

, coincidentally the best qualified behind a monitor, charged a non-existent penalty in favor of Racing that defined the Avellaneda classic.

The move, seen a thousand times on television, caused Independiente to officially ask the AFA to annul the penalty and exposed the internal referees, as published by

Clarín

.

Also, a weak side of the AFA.

The implementation of the VAR has been working for two years, but it will only be put into operation after the Copa América.

Why is it one of the most important leagues on the continent that has not yet adopted the system that already works in Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador?

Due to the pandemic and an endorsement of the leaders that never came

, everything was postponed and it was not arrived in time for the Professional League Cup.

However, there is a decision made.

The training stage for 38 referees came to an end.

In total, there will be 50 judges - 12 had already received the certification in Conmebol and FIFA - qualified to occupy a different place, outside the margins of the playing field, but with as much influence as the referee who will have the whistle.

In April 2019, Claudio Tapia announced the incorporation of a system that reduces the margin of error but is not without discussion.

And it was a white elephant from the AFA.

Despite the fact that a large working group was assembled with Javier Marín (vice president of Acasusso) and Pablo Silva at the helm and

1,500,000 dollars

were

invested in imported equipment

, they passed five championships and there were no signs.

Without going any further, Marín resigned from his position as

Project Lider

and Silva moved to Asunción to work with Horacio Elizondo, who heads the Referees Committee of the Paraguayan Football Association, where the VAR has operated since last year.

Currently, the main people in charge of the project are

Beligoy

;

the development manager,

Luis Castro;

the technical chief and former assistant, Sergio Viola;

Mauro Vigliano and Hernán Maidana

, who were appointed as instructors, although they are still in office.

Both were in the 2018 World Cup in Russia (the assistant judge also participated in Brazil 2014).

Vigliano has VOR (Video Office Room) and Maidana booth hours, the trade of the field and a high preparation as a consultant in the material at an international and national level.

This time, as Beligoy himself declared in these hot hours due to the constant failures of his referees, he is serious.

The VAR came to eradicate the clear, obvious and manifest errors: the goal that entered or did not enter, the punch that the referee did not see, if the fault was a meter outside or inside the area.

If it happens that there are 10 errors per weekend, and the VAR solves 8 or 9, I sign

”, said the boss of the referees, who assured that it will be available from July.

How will it work?

The AFA is finishing preparing a building on the Ezeiza property that will be the Intelligence Center from where the VAR will operate.

It even works against the clock in the laying of the optical fiber.

In Spain, Holland, Germany, England, Portugal and the United States it works this way.

In the case of not arriving on time with the Central Intelligence, an outdoor truck will be used.

This situation could also occur according to the complexity of the stadiums

.

In short, not all courts have a good internet system.

At any juncture, it will be necessary to coordinate with Tournaments, which is the company that provides the images.

There will be between 8 and 16 cameras, depending on the difficulty or significance of the match.

There are monitors that will follow the live and others that will be used for replays.

And a strict protocol that must be followed to the letter.

Even when you have to open and close the VOR cab door.

The equipment was provided by Reftel SRL, the national company that deals with the intercoms used by referees.

Its owner is

Ramiro González Palazzo

, a young entrepreneur who partnered with Simply Live from Belgium.

In October 2019, it won the tender to the Spanish MediaPro and Hawk Eye, belonging to the Sony Group based in England.

Among the referees there is expectation.

From SADRA, Guillermo Marconi shot:

“We have been asking for it for a long time.

It is clear that they have already achieved what they wanted and now they have agreed to implement it ”

.

In the Ascent, especially, there were arbitrations that raised suspicions.

And there are also complaints.

"Let's not expect miracles when there are no trained referees to direct," said Javier Castrilli.

"The VAR is a jerk", launched Pablo Lunati.

The controversy will continue, of course.
