Senator Eduardo Enríquez Maya, of the Colombian Conservative Party, died this Wednesday, according to that political group in a statement published on Twitter.
"Today we say goodbye to a great conservative, defender like no other of the doctrine and thought of our community," wrote the group on the social network, thanking the senator for his service to the country.
President Iván Duque also lamented the death of Maya, and said he received the event with "pain."
"He was my colleague in the Senate, my friend, a rigorous and patriotic parliamentarian, a prominent jurist and an implacable defender of the rule of law," the president wrote on his social networks.
At the moment, the exact cause of death of the senator is unknown.
However, the Conservative Party announced on April 6 that Enríquez had tested positive for covid-19.
Several Colombian politicians mourned the death of Enríquez.

I am deeply saddened by the death of Senator Eduardo Enríquez Maya with whom I shared in the Senate, ”the mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López Hernández, said on Twitter.
Jhon Rojas, governor of the department of Nariño, described him on social media as a “man of law, constitutionalist, professor and great political leader of Nariño.

Several senators lamented the death of Enríquez during the session of the First Permanent Constitutional Committee of the Senate this Wednesday.
For its part, the Foreign Ministry wrote on its Twitter account that the senator was "a man at the service of democracy who will leave an important legacy to our country."
Enríquez, a 72-year-old from the department of Nariño, has been a senator since 2006.
