Many pet owners in Hong Kong regard their dogs as their beloved ones, feeding them with "pots" from time to time, and even replacing dry food with wet food.

The Consumer Council tested 20 canned or boxed wet foods mainly for dogs and found that the mineral content of 80% of the samples failed to fully comply with international recommendations.

Among them, the two staple food cans "almo nature" and "TOPVALU" contain vitamin D lower than the minimum recommended levels for adult dogs in Europe and the United States. "Applaws" has detected vitamin D, which may be insufficient in intake or affect the bone health of dogs.

The amino acid content of the staple food tank of "Vidobao" is also lower than the relevant European and American recommendations.

The proportion of fat in the "NAtUrEA" non-staple food tank is obviously higher. If the pet owner does not pay attention to the fat proportion of the product and overfeeds, it may cause the dog to consume too much fat, which will easily lead to overweight.

The Consumer Council tested 20 types of canned or boxed wet food mainly for dogs on the market, including 15 types of fully nutritious pet food (staple food cans) and 5 types of supplementary pet food (non-staple food cans).

The test items cover the content of major and micronutrients, and evaluate the content of harmful substances in each sample.

Only 4 micronutrients meet the standard

It was found that in terms of minerals and other micronutrients, 80% of the samples failed to fully comply with international recommendations. Only the mineral content of the 4 staple food cans fully complied with the 3 pet food organizations including AAFCO in the United States, FEDIAF in Europe, and the National Research Council (NRC). ) Relevant recommendations for the maintenance period of adult dogs.

The 4 models include "ZIWI Peak", "AVP", "ORGANIX" and "Hills".

The Consumer Council pointed out that although the mineral content of another 4 samples did not fully meet the relevant recommendations, the overall mineral content level is still satisfactory, including "K9 Natural", "Zignature", "Baolu" and "Viduobao."

In terms of overall ratings, "AVP" and "ORGANIX" received 5 points, the highest score.

3 Vitamin D is too low and insufficient intake affects bone health in dogs

It is worth noting that the test results show that the vitamin D in the two staple food cans of "almo nature" and "TOPVALU" is lower than the recommendation, and fails to meet the relevant minimum content recommendations set for adult dog full-nutrition foods. Samples of non-staple food cans "Applaws" did not detect vitamin D3.

The Consumer Council reminds that dogs mainly take vitamin D through their daily diet. If they are not taken in enough for a long time, it may affect the immune system and affect the bone growth of the dog, causing osteoporosis in adult dogs.

"NAtUrEA" lead content in non-staple food cans exceeds EU standards

The test also found that four samples of "ORGANIX", "AATU", "LILY'S KITCHEN" and "NAtUrEA" were found to contain lead. Among them, the "NAtUrEA Grain-Free Fresh Meat Series" non-staple food can samples detected lead content of 11.2 mg per kilogram of food. Water content of 12%), which exceeds the upper limit set by EU regulations for supplementary animal feed (10 mg per kilogram of food).

The Consumer Council stated that it urges relevant product suppliers to improve the lead content of pet food.

In addition, 9 samples were detected with arsenic or cadmium, 2 of which also detected trace amounts of melamine. The detected amount did not exceed the relevant EU regulations, and it is believed that it will not pose a health risk to the dog.
