Iraq: US base attacked by armed drone

2021-04-15T03:01:48.946Z

With the help of a drone, explosives were dropped on a US military base in northern Iraq. Almost at the same time there was a missile attack on a Turkish base. One soldier was fatally injured.

Another attack was carried out on the US base near the international airport in Erbil in northern Iraq.

The interior ministry of the autonomous Kurdish regional government announced on Wednesday that explosives were deliberately dropped on the US military base with an armed drone.

There were no immediate reports of victims.

However, one building was damaged.

The Bundeswehr confirmed the explosion in the area of the Erbil airfield.

"All German soldiers in the #BundeswehrimEinsatz are doing well," said the official Twitter account.

It was the first known use of an armed drone against the US armed forces in Erbil.

So far, nobody has confessed to the drone attack on the airport.

However, the pro-Iranian militia Aulijaa al-Dam (Blood Guard), which had already claimed a similar attack on the airport in February, welcomed the attack on the Telegram messenger service.

Shortly before the attack, three rockets were also fired at a Turkish base in the west of the city, said the Turkish Ministry of Defense.

One hit there and killed a soldier, the two other missiles hit a nearby village and wounded a boy.

According to the ministry, an armed drone was shot down and "necessary measures" taken.

It is not yet known whether there is a link between the attacks.

Turkey has deployed troops in northern Iraq both as part of a NATO contingent and to combat Kurdish separatists.

The Iran-backed militias oppose both the presence of the United States and Turkey and demand a full withdrawal of all foreign troops.

In February, the same US-led military base near Erbil International Airport was hit by missiles, killing a non-US contractor who works with the US military.

The already tense situation in the Middle East had worsened since the US targeted Iranian top commander Qasem Soleimani during his visit to Iraq during Donald Trump's tenure at the beginning of January 2020.

In response, Iran attacked US military bases in Iraq.
