The Biden administration announced on Thursday the imposition of sanctions against Russia, including the expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats for allegedly interfering in the last election and a cyber attack against bodies in the US administration.
White House officials suggest that this is the first response to a cyber attack that took place last year, a break-in that involved infiltrating many government agencies, including classified information from one of the country's intelligence agencies.
The incident took place about 48 hours after a phone call between US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Thus, the Russian army is intensifying near the Ukrainian border and the Russian media are openly talking about the possibility of Russian action in its western neighbor.
The tense situation in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists are systematically violating the ceasefire, obscures the attempt to find a diplomatic solution to the disagreements between Moscow and Washington and threatens to put the two governments on a collision course.
