A 32-year-old woman was hospitalized today (Sunday) following severe kidney failure, after undergoing "Indian" hair straightening.
From the Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, it was reported that already during the skating, the woman began to feel unwell.
She vomited, and was later transferred to the hospital and is now being treated in the intensive care unit, including dialysis.
Prof. Miguel Geltstein, a toxicology consultant at Barzilai Medical Center, explained that the suspected substance involved is ethylene glycol - a toxic liquid that is often used as a freezer and as a raw material for the production of polymers, and when it comes in contact with the body it oxidizes and damages the nervous system, heart or kidneys.
"Similar other cases are known to have occurred both in the past and recently at other medical centers, after straightening hair with substances that are prohibited for use," the hospital added.
The case was reported to the Ministry of Health.
