MK Yinon Azulai (Shas) today (Sunday) submitted a bill stating that every restaurant will be required to have an "epinephrine" syringe, for the initial treatment of allergy sufferers as part of a condition for obtaining a business license. This, following the death of 23-year-old Osher Deri from a severe allergy after eating a dairy dessert at a kosher meat restaurant in Rosh Pina. Senior doctors welcome the initiative and claim it will save lives.

The explanatory memorandum to the bill states that, on average, two deaths occur in Israel each year due to allergy to certain foods and other cases of complications of varying severity. "The most severe allergic reaction, known as an anaphylactic reaction, can cause severe breathing difficulties, loss of consciousness and even death. This reaction is sometimes immediate, and may appear immediately after exposure to the allergen (or 10 to 20 minutes after exposure)," it said.

This severe reaction can be treated with epinephrine, a syringe containing adrenaline.

The injection of adrenaline into the thigh relaxes the respiratory muscles and constricts the blood vessels and allows a time interval until medical treatment is received at the hospital.

This is a life-saving operation that must be performed in the field, immediately, as the deterioration of the allergy symptoms to a state of suffocation and death may continue for a few minutes.

Despite awareness among allergy sufferers and the need to carry an epinephrine syringe, allergy sufferers are still at risk, especially when eating out, in cafes and restaurants.

This is because the allergic person is not always aware of all the ingredients in the food served to him.

"The only life-saving drug in the world"

The chairman of the Allergy Association and director of the internal medicine department at Hadassah Ein Kerem, Prof. Alon Hershko, welcomed the initiative. Food allergy is a problem of children and young adults, in case of accidental administration of epinephrine there are no serious side effects. That is, if the allergic person did not receive the drug he could die, but if he was given it by mistake nothing happened. It should be given as close as possible to the event, "he explained.

" In the last week I have not calmed down, because a young girl whose whole life before her should not have died. "She could have lived up to 120," says Prof. Hershko.

According to him, there are three life-saving actions in case of an allergic reaction: the first is to call MDA; the second is to lay the patient down because the blood flow lying down is less than sitting or standing, and lowers the chance of spreading in the body; while the third is epinephrine injection.

"A very simple thing that the patient is used to and knows how to use himself."

"You don't have to go through any training, it's a very simple thing that the patient is used to and knows how to use himself," Hershko clarified. "The reaction of the allergy is immediate - usually a few minutes to an hour after eating. There is tickling in the mouth, abdominal pain, high blood pressure and late onset difficulty breathing, then it is really anaphylactic shock. It is the only drug in the world that saves lives."

Prof. Hagai Levin, from the Association of Public Health Physicians in Israel, clarified in a conversation with Walla! Because mortality from anaphylactic reaction to food allergens can certainly be prevented. "Studies show that over 50% of anaphylactic reactions to food occur outside the home. A food allergy prevention program is required that includes training, labeling allergenic food items as is customary in Europe, signage and access to epinephrine syringes."

"The presence of an epinephrine syringe in public space can save lives, as a complementary step to self-preservation. These steps need to be implemented, in legislation and other means, on a professional basis and while considering all considerations. MK Azoulay and Arbel's bill is a step in the right direction," Levin concluded.
