The CSU delegates of the federal constituency of Starnberg-Landsberg-Germering met against an unusual backdrop to set up their direct candidate for the federal election.

Kaltenberg

- In the arena of Schloss Kaltenberg, the exciting thing was not so much the choice itself - Michael Kießling was considered a given from the start - but rather the question of how the event with over 100 participants in a medieval ambience would go off. A good 150 people are almost a mass gathering in Corona times - too much in any case for a closed room, even if it had been the Germeringer Stadthalle, as originally planned.

But in the arena, where daredevil riders throw each other out of the saddle at the Kaltenberg knight tournament, there is space for 10,000 spectators.

And so the CSU representatives looked almost a bit lost in the wide oval, where they sat with a mask and several places apart.

He has already fought many a battle, joked the Germering local chairman Oliver Simon when he greeted him, but he has never seen a nomination meeting in such a symbolic place as a battle arena.

Michael Kießling calls for opening perspectives

Michael Kießing, however, did not feel “like the Black Knight”, the traditional main character of the Kaltenberg Medieval Tournament. He also sees no battle looming, but a choice of direction that will primarily be about three questions. "How do we get out of the pandemic, how do we protect the climate and how do we finance it?" On the subject of Corona, the 47-year-old demanded not only vaccinations and testing, but also "opening perspectives to get people more involved". He wants to strengthen companies, invest in families and volunteer work and protect the climate with “incentives, not bans”.

When it came to the question of the candidate for chancellor, Kießling avoided too militant tones in the address of the sister party CDU.

They had “made her an offer” with Markus Söder and it was “curious” whether she would accept it.

Söder have the better starting chances.

"Good polls are a pound to take with you."

The tone grew rougher in the direction of political competitors.

Still-coalition partner SPD sees Kießling before a left jolt.

"Everything that the SPD plans to do will lead to tax increases." He also accused the Greens of wanting to raise taxes "on a broad front" and striving for a new social order.

"The green state is a redistributive state."

According to the civil engineer, his first four years in the Bundestag passed quickly.

He worked on the building and environment committee, was on the road a lot in his constituency and was “extremely happy” to represent the citizens of the region in Berlin.

Most of the 145 delegates present wanted him to continue to do so.

Kießling was nominated with 140 votes in favor.

There were no opposing candidates.

Distance is maintained, the bouquet is only thrown

Corona-compliant, Oliver Simon refrained from handing Kießling the prepared bouquet - he would rather throw it to the freshly chosen candidate.

“A quick meeting” was what Stefanie von Winning, district chairwoman of Starnberg, wanted at the beginning.

And since Kießling limited his speech to ten minutes, submitted his statement of accounts in writing in the form of a flyer and greetings were dispensed with, Winning's wish was fulfilled.

After an hour it was all over.
