2021-04-18T16:30:43.218Z

ANALYSIS - Beyond the apocalypse images that reach us from the Latin American subcontinent, the region is suffering the full force of the crisis with serious economic, social and political consequences.

The images struck people's minds during the first wave of Covid-19: dozens of corpses abandoned by their families on the streets of Guayaquil in Ecuador.

Funeral homes were too overwhelmed to take care of the deceased.

The thousands of daily deaths in Bolsonaro's Brazil also show a country on the brink of collapse.

● What is the real impact of the epidemic?

A recent report from France Stratégie confirms the health impact of the pandemic in Latin America, which suffered the highest excess mortality with a rate of 51.6%, while Europe recorded 17.8% more deaths in 2020 compared to to 2019. If we take the death toll, Chile seems more affected than its neighbors.

But excess mortality is only 16.3%, while in Bolivia it reaches 48%.

In Peru, it is 100%.

In many Latin American states, the failures of the administrative system and health structures prevent an accurate assessment of the effects of Covid-19.
