A spokeswoman for the Revolutionary Guards announced today (Sunday) that Muhammad Hijazi, the deputy commander of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards and an adviser to the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ruhallah Khomeini, has died of a heart attack after a long illness.
Hijazi was a close adviser to Khomeini and, according to several intelligence agencies, was responsible for planning the terrorist attack on the Israeli embassy in Argentina in 1994, in which 85 people were killed.
Last year, an Israeli intelligence source reported that Hijazi had also been entrusted with the Hezbollah terrorist missile project in Lebanon.
Hijazi also had confidence in the establishment of pro-Iranian organizations in Syria and by media reports identified with the rebels, seen in the country several times in recent years.
Hijazi took part in the bloody repression of the popular protest in Iran in 2009, in which protesters were murdered and tortured against the country's election results.
This is a severe blow to the organization as apart from Hijazi's centrality in the Quds Force, the organization has been suffering from a severe command vacuum since the assassination of its commander, Kasim Suleimani, last year in Baghdad.
The Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards is the foreign arm of the organization, which believes in establishing Iran's presence in the countries of the region, persecuting opponents of the regime abroad and carrying out attacks in foreign countries.
