Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Bureau stated that the first earthquake occurred at around 10:11 pm on the 18th. A moderately felt earthquake occurred in Hualien. The authorities stated that the earthquake intensity was 5.8 and the focal depth was 15 kilometers; after a three-minute interval, the local area was at 10:14. A felt earthquake occurred again. The epicenter was located in Shoufeng Township, 19.2 kilometers southwest of the Hualien County Government, and the focal depth was 14 kilometers. Both are shallow earthquakes.

An earthquake of magnitude 2 or higher was recorded throughout Taiwan, and an earthquake of magnitude 6 was recorded in Hualien County. The Taipei area was shaken for at least 10 seconds during the earthquake.
