32-year-old suffered from severe poisoning as a result of using illicit substances during "Indian skating" • The woman suffers from kidney failure and is being treated on dialysis
Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon
A 32-year-old woman is hospitalized in the intensive care unit of Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon after reaching a state of severe kidney failure.
The condition was allegedly caused by a substance used to straighten hair, known as "Indian hair straightening".
According to Prof. Miguel Geltstein, a toxicology consultant for the medical center, the suspected mixed substance is ethylene glycol - a toxic liquid that is often used as a freezer and as a raw material for polymer production, and when it comes in contact with the body it oxidizes and can damage the nervous system, heart or kidneys.
Other similar cases are known to have occurred both in the past and recently in other medical centers, after straightening hair with substances that are prohibited for use.
Even while straightening her hair, the woman began to feel unwell. She vomited, was later transferred to Barzilai Medical Center, and is now being treated, among other things, by dialysis, in the intensive care unit.
