An earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale hit western Indonesia at dawn today, without any news of casualties or material damage.
Reuters quoted the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center as saying that the earthquake shook the Nias region in the west of the country and struck at a depth of ten kilometers. No warnings were issued about the possibility of a subsequent tsunami.
Last January, Indonesia was hit by a powerful earthquake of 6.2 magnitude, causing dozens of casualties in West Sulawesi Province.
Indonesia is considered one of the most earthquake-active regions on Earth and forms part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire.
