Has the Union's K question been answered?

The CDU board spoke in a complex nightly vote.

Now all eyes are on Markus Söder.

The news ticker.

  • Armin Laschet * and Markus Söder are fighting for the Union's candidacy for chancellor.

  • After much back and forth, clarity could now prevail.

The CDU board voted on Monday (April 19) (

    update from 0.33 a.m.

    ).

  • Armin Laschet apparently sees himself as the winner - but the nocturnal procedure did not let the CDU look in the best light.

    ).

  • This news ticker is continuously updated.

Update from April 20, 9 a.m.:

CDU politicians see Armin Laschet legitimized as the Union's candidate for chancellor.

"This is really a clear result, which I think will be accepted by everyone," said the former Secretary General Ruprecht Polenz on Tuesday the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation.

"The losing minority must join the majority decision," he added.

CDU budget expert Eckhardt Rehberg told NDR Info that Söder must now keep his word to support the CDU chairman and campaign together without resentment.

"If he didn't do that, that would be the second break in the word," says Rehberg.

“If that goes on between the CDU and CSU, between Laschet and Söder, then it will damage the Union even more than it has before, then we can stop the election campaign,” Rehberg said.

He pointed out that Laschet had only been elected CDU party chairman three months ago.

"It must have been clear to everyone who is chairman, who also has access to the candidacy for chancellor."

Söder vs. Laschet: Chancellor candidate of the Union - hope for an early end to the power struggle

Update from April 20, 8:12 a.m .:

Hope for an end to the Union power struggle, but too early to congratulate: "It would be desirable that the CDU leadership settled the unspeakable cockfight tonight and that both parties - CDU and CSU - at this difficult time for so many people in the country are finally concentrating on factual politics again, ”said SPD leader Norbert Walter-Borjans on Tuesday of the German press agency.

However, he expressed his doubts that the CSU leadership would give in. "As someone who has not only seen Markus Söder's behavior over the past few days, but also knows his opinion of Armin Laschet from years of personal experience, I am not very optimistic about the promised loyalty oath of the 'party friend' from Bavaria", said Walter-Borjans. And added: "As a political competitor and North Rhine-Westphalia I can congratulate Armin Laschet on the result of the vote - it is too early to congratulate."

Update from April 20, 8 a.m.:

The deputy chairman of the Union parliamentary group Thorsten Frei expects a decision on Tuesday in the Union's candidacy for chancellor.

"In any case, it is a crystal clear statement, which is why I expect that this question will also be resolved today between the two parties, and that this question will be resolved amicably, as it is agreed," said the CDU politician Frei am Tuesday on Deutschlandfunk.

CDU board votes for Armin Laschet - soon clarity in the power struggle CDU boss vs. Söder?

Update from April 20, 6:15 a.m.:

It was a memorable meeting: after more than six hours of deliberation, the CDU board voted in favor of chairman Armin Laschet with a clear majority. This Tuesday will show whether the Union's power struggle is actually over. The online mood revealed the result 31: 9 for Laschet - and against the competitor for the candidate for chancellor, Markus Söder (CSU).

"We as the CSU and I also respect every decision," Söder said before the special digital session. It remains to be seen how the Union faction in the Bundestag and the Laschet critics on the CDU base will behave. The afternoon session of the CDU and CSU members of the Bundestag should bring clarity. A week ago, the majority of those in favor of Söder's candidacy spoke up.

Update from April 20, 1:00 a.m .:

Armin Laschet sees the dispute for Chancellor candidates apparently over after the marathon meeting of the CDU federal executive committee: With the words “I will now do all I can for this CDU.

Good night! ”, He said goodbye to

the participants of the online round

after information from the

world

.

He does not take anything of what has been said "to heart".

Laschet also announced a phone call with Söder.

However, at a press conference on Monday last week, the CDU boss had apparently already felt himself to be the winner of the wrestling.

Is now the winner in the Chancellor's wrestling with Söder?

CDU board votes - final confirmation from Munich is still pending

Update from April 20, 0.45 a.m.:

After major teething problems and hours of debates, the CDU executive board may still have brought about a decision on the Union chancellor candidate: According to matching media reports, the committee voted in an online vote quite clearly in favor of Armin Laschet - and against Markus Söder - pronounced: 31: 9 for Laschet the result was, according to several sources.

This could end the week-long public wrestling.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether this will really happen: CSU boss Söder announced on Monday that he would now accept a vote from the CDU, but there was initially no confirmation from the CSU in view of the majority ratios that had already become public.

It is also still unclear how the CDU will deal with the involvement of the district chairmen, which was apparently debated in the course of the evening.

In the end, a corresponding conference had not been scheduled.

According to information from the dpa, 29 board members with voting rights voted against the proposal and 14 in favor.

Desires could still have been aroused.

Another open question: what price will the Union pay for the chaotic chancellor candidate freestyle?

Söder versus Laschet: Chancellor decision made?

The CDU board has now apparently finally voted

Update from April 20, 3:33 a.m.:

Has the Union's chancellor question been decided at nighttime?

According to information from the

world

, the

CDU federal

executive voted - the result of the vote was: "31 Laschet, 9 Söder, 6 included".

At least that's what journalist Robin Alexander tweeted.

The AFP news agency also confirms the vote: In a secret digital vote, 77.5 percent of the members of the CDU board voted for Laschet and 22.5 percent of the members of the CDU board for CSU boss Markus Söder, the agency reports, citing party circles.

Update from April 20, 0.25 a.m.:

Furthermore, the decisions of the CDU round reach the public in the shortest possible time: A district chairman's conference to clarify the mood at the base (

Laschet-Söder-Ringen on the CDU board: Voting becomes a Twitter ridicule

Update from April 20, 0.20 a.m

.: CDU boss Armin Laschet is apparently trying to bring about a decision on the chancellor question in the most democratic way possible - but there are massive problems: According to information from the

picture, there was

initially

uncertainty

about whether board members without voting rights - how State chairmen and prime ministers - are allowed to vote. Next, there were concerns about digital voting.

Chancellery chief Helge Braun is said to have even called for a presence event on Tuesday. Laschet has now probably insisted on an online vote this evening. "It cannot be that we fail because of a technical digital problem," he is supposed to have declared. The difficulties, which quickly leaked to the public digitally, caused massive ridicule almost in real time - also publicly carried out on Twitter.

"Digitization and the CDU will no longer be friends," joked FDP MP Christian Jung, "no real participation for me if the high-performance slotting machine 'OL 1000 plus' is not used," scoffed SPD Vice-President Kevin Kühnert.

Even within its own party, the situation caused unnerved reactions.

"You can really make it difficult for yourself," annoyed the Thuringian CDU board member Mike Mohring in the short message service.

For me, no real participation if the high-performance slotting machine "OL 1000 plus" is not used.

Union in dispute: Schäuble and Brinkhaus for quick decision on K question

Update from April 19, 11:58 p.m

.: Will there still be a decision or not? Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble and Union parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus favor at least a quick end to the internal union chancellor dispute. According to dpa information, Schäuble is said to have again clearly spoken out in favor of Armin Laschet. He urged you to make a decision in the current meeting. Brinkhaus therefore emphasized that there was no need for a hanging game, but a quick decision. The session now lasts six hours.

Update from April 19, 11:29 p.m

.: The digital Union special session on the K question could be

drawing

to a close.

The last requests to speak are currently on the agenda.

Among other things, Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble and Volker Bouffier, Hessian Prime Minister and avowed Laschet fan, will speak.

Afterwards, a vote will actually be started - provided that the parties involved agree on the procedure.

Chancellor question of the Union: Laschet wants to seek contact with the base - but not leave it to the K question

Update from April 19, 10:41 p.m

.: It seems as if Armin Laschet wants

to approach

the base. According to information from the APA news agency, the CDU boss wants to talk to the base soon. However, he still wants to have a decision on the candidacy for chancellor made in the evening by the board and not by a conference of district chairmen. This indicates that the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister does not want to leave the answer to the Chancellor's question in the hands of the grassroots. Reports of such an approach had previously been loud (

see update at 10:08 p.m.

).

According to participants, some speakers emphasized that they themselves were convinced of Laschet - that Söder was ahead in the party base's preference.

This could have given the impetus for Laschet's announcement that a district chairperson's conference would be convened soon.

Laschet vs. Söder: Will there be a secret vote in the CDU board?

Update from April 19, 10:27 p.m

.: This already historic special meeting of the CDU federal

executive

seems to be writing its next chapter.

After a report from

Bild

, there could even be a secret vote within the board of directors.

When and in particular how such a vote should take place remains unclear.

Such a procedure might have had to be prepared in advance.

Voting showdown in the Chancellor dispute?

Laschet confuses the CDU board with a proposal

Update from April 19, 10:08 p.m

.: Will a decision be made in the Chancellor dispute tonight?

According to information from the

world

, Armin Laschet wants to hold on to a vote by the CDU federal executive committee, but has meanwhile also spoken of a conference of district chairmen.

As a result, confusion is said to have arisen among the participants in the special digital session.

At the end of today's discussion, it could either be clarified whether there would be a conference of district chairpersons first and then a vote by the board.

Alternatively, there could be a vote today before a subsequent district chairperson's conference could be scheduled.

Laschet should prefer this plan.

The weight of the possible vote remains unclear.

Some MPs such as Hamburg's state chairman Christoph Ploß had already brought such a district chairperson's conference into play (

see update at 8:05 p.m.

).

The aim is to get a better picture of the mood at the grassroots level.

The deputy chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU, Christian Baldauf, had already spoken out in favor of such a procedure before the special session.

The district chairmen are the most important representatives of the base in the CDU Germany, said Baldauf.

It is also not a problem to convene such a conference at very short notice.

Chancellor question in the Union: Laschet receives support from Baden-Württemberg

Update from April 19, 9:32 p.m

.: Laschet has probably received support from CDU chairman Thomas Strobl in Baden-Württemberg. In the special digital meeting of the CDU board on the K question, Strobl reported, according to information from the dpa, of a mixed picture in Baden-Württemberg. There are entrepreneurs who are for CSU boss Markus Söder. And there are people and family entrepreneurs who plead with him to make Laschet a candidate for chancellor, he said. The CDU MPs from the south-west had mostly positioned themselves in favor of Söder in the parliamentary group meeting last week.

Strobl also emphasized that the CDU presidium in Baden-Württemberg supports Laschet. The CDU leader should become Federal Chancellor. Laschet is not a divider, but someone who brings people together and integrates different political opinions.

Update from April 19, 9:19 p.m

.: The statements per Laschet are apparently getting stronger.

According to information from

Focus Online

, Mike Mohring, CDU board member from Thuringia, is said to

have spoken out in favor of the CDU chief: "We have to give the party leader full support," said Mohring, according to the report.

It is correct that the party chairman reaches for the candidacy for chancellor.

"I have confidence in Armin Laschet, and we need a clear decision today."

Explosive: The Thuringian CDU state chief Christian Hirte took sides for Markus Söder according to dpa information.

Laschet or Söder?

Decisive vote apparently this evening

Update from April 19, 8:48 p.m

.: In the question of the Union's chancellor, there is apparently actually a showdown by vote.

According to information from

ntv

, the K-question should be voted on in the evening.

The picture is not so much pro Söder as propagated by some of the speakers.

Nevertheless, it could be tight for Armin Laschet, which could make Markus Söder's statements in the afternoon interesting again: “If the CDU confidently makes a clear decision, then we will accept that.” Söder left open what a “clear decision” is .

It is still unclear when a result will be available.

Apparently the special digital session could last until midnight.

Chancellor question: Emphasis on the basis - Altmaier apparently also takes sides

Update from April 19, 8:22 p.m

.: Again and again in the

requests to speak

in the federal

executive

committee should be the talk of the base.

Julia Klöckner, for example, emphasized that you have to listen to the base (

see update at 7.09 p.m.

).

This means that these voices position themselves indirectly for Markus Söder, even if they do not literally name the CSU boss.

Because Söder enjoys significantly better survey results compared to his opponent Armin Laschet and can rely on the support of various regional associations.

According to information from participants in the group, Minister of Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier also spoke out in favor of hearing the grassroots on the K question.

Laschet or Söder?

CDU boss calls for a vote this Monday

Update from April 19,

8:05 p.m.: Is Armin Laschet asking the decisive vote?

The CDU boss apparently wants to bring about a decision by the federal executive committee on Monday.

At the meeting, calls for the decision to be postponed to the Bundestag faction and to the district chairmen had previously been loud, the AFP news agency learned from participants on Monday evening.

Laschet replied: "We should decide today as we set out to do at the beginning."

According to WDR information, Hamburg's state chairman Christoph Ploß asked for a district chairperson's conference to get a better picture of the mood at the grassroots level.

Chancellor question: Haseloff is clearly positioning himself - "we have coordinated in the East"

Update from April 19, 7.40 p.m

.: The headwind for Armin Laschet is apparently

getting

stronger. Reiner Haseloff, Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt and Söder supporter, is said to

have reported a clear vote in the new federal states,

according to

bild.de

: "We have voted in the East." There is a "clear preference for Markus Söder", Haseloff is said to have said. The AFP news agency also reports that Haseloff spoke out clearly against Laschet. According to the Brandenburg State Association, such a vote would not have taken place for Söder. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the trend should also be more in the direction of Laschet.

Update from April 19, 7:31 p.m

.: When will a decision be made on the question of the chancellor?

According to information from the German Press Agency, the Schleswig-Holstein Prime Minister Daniel Günther has called for a decision in the current CDU board meeting.

Presidium member Norbert Röttgen spoke out against a decision that evening.

Chancellor debate: Powerful CDU voices apparently warn - the basis must be taken into account

Update from April 19, 7:09 p.m

.: The CDU board is apparently hotly debating the chancellor question: There have been around 40 requests to speak, participants in the group told the AFP news agency.

In particular from North Rhine-Westphalia there were statements in favor of Laschet, for example from NRW Minister of Health Karl-Josef Laumann.

At the same time, however, critical voices were apparently heard against the CDU chief. "Let's be honest, the majority at the grassroots level is not for Armin Laschet", Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther is

said to have said

according to

bild.de.

This is explosive because Günther was one of the first CDU politicians to speak out in favor of Laschet. His prime minister colleague is still an "excellent candidate", it is said, and the parliamentary group in Schleswig-Holstein was clearly behind Laschet.

CDU Vice Julia Klöckner is also said to have emphasized that she wanted to keep an eye on “the base”.

The Minister of Agriculture obtained an opinion on Monday in her regional association in Rhineland-Palatinate.

There was a clear opinion for Söder - but there was no vote.

Klöckner had previously spoken out in public for Laschet.

The Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia nevertheless considers Rhineland-Palatinate to be a suitable CDU leader.

K question in the Union: AKK apparently pro Laschet - criticism of Söder

Update from April 19, 6:55 p.m

.: According to information from

bild.de

, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer criticized Markus Söder's behavior on the federal board. Laschet's predecessor at the top of the CDU stated that she had received many e-mails from Union members in which the Bavarian Prime Minister's power games were “disapproved”. In addition, the current defense minister is said to have stood behind Laschet.

Kramp-Karrenbauer stood behind a candidate for chancellor by the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia. She also pleaded for a quick decision. The members of the board have management responsibility, said was according to information from participants, as reported by the dpa. Europe is looking to Germany - this would require a strong Union and a strong CDU. Kramp-Karrenbauer criticized Söder because he had not kept the promise to accept the vote of the CDU on Monday last week.

Update from April 19, 6:51 p.m

.: Armin Laschet has apparently asked his critics to come out of cover.

Participants told the AFP news agency on Monday evening that he had encouraged the top committee to have an “open debate” on the question of who should become the Union’s candidate for chancellor.

After his affirmation of going into the race as candidate for chancellor, the other participants would now have to give their opinion.

Chancellor dispute in the Union: Laschet confirms candidacy - and calls for transparency

Update from April 19, 6:36 p.m

.: Armin Laschet has apparently again emphasized his willingness to run for chancellor.

“It's about the best answers to the pressing questions of the future.

And I am ready to take on the candidacy for us, ”said Laschet on Monday evening after information from the dpa in the digital special meeting of the CDU board.

He was quoted as saying: "Only if we are open and completely transparent will we have a chance to go into the next few weeks and into the election campaign stronger than before."

K-Question of the Union: Showdown is looming - will there be a vote in the CDU executive committee?

Update from April 19, 6:17 p.m

.: Will there still be a vote on the candidate for chancellor in the CDU federal executive committee today?

Armin Laschet is apparently supposed to reserve the right to do this.

“The course of the meeting will show whether there will be a vote by the federal executive committee today,” said the AFP news agency on Monday evening from participants.

Last showdown in the Chancellor dispute?

Laschets CDU on the ball - Söder-Mann warns of "political suicide"

Update from April 19, 5:59 p.m

.: In these minutes, the special meeting of the CDU federal

executive

committee on the chancellor question begins. From the point of view of the CDU member of the Bundestag Christian von Stetten, it is imperative to keep an eye on the mood in the Union parliamentary group. "The CDU federal executive will make a wise decision today and take into account the mood in the CDU / CSU parliamentary group," he emphasized on Monday afternoon. "Anything else would be political suicide." The MP from Schwäbisch Hall / Hohenlohe spoke out clearly in favor of Markus Söder days ago.

Meanwhile, Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble has criticized leadership in the K debate.

"Leadership sometimes also requires acting against the trend of opinion polls and first convincing the population of the chosen path," Schäuble told

Tagesspiegel

.

It would be a “contempt for the democratic sovereign” if politics ignored surveys - but surveys cannot replace leadership, Schäuble explained: “Democracy cannot work without leadership.” It is the task of politics to find this balance again and again - even in arduous processes - to find.

Schäuble has already made it clear that he is in favor of Armin Laschet.

Apparently, he also clearly warned Laschet internally not to flinch *.

Last showdown in the Chancellor dispute?

Söder gives Laschet's CDU responsibility - the decision is near

First report from April 19, 5 p.m

.: Berlin - Who will

stand

as the head of the parties in the federal election on September 26?

While the SPD decided early on on a candidate for chancellor with Olaf Scholz, the Greens followed suit on Monday (April 19) and presented Annalena Baerbock.

There is still disagreement in the Union.

Armin Laschet or Markus Söder?

Who is the CDU / CSU sending into the race?

A decision is apparently getting closer - on Monday evening the CDU board will meet for a possibly decisive meeting.

Laschet or Söder: Power struggle within the Union - who will be candidate for chancellor?
