The US ambassador to Russia said today (Monday) that he would arrive in Washington this week for consultations, after the Kremlin advised him so in the wake of the diplomatic crisis between the powers.
The ambassador, John Sullivan, said he planned to return to Russia within a few weeks, before a possible summit between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The crisis between Moscow and the West has intensified in recent weeks after Russia concentrated tens of thousands of troops on the border with Ukraine and was accused by the Czech Republic of being responsible for an arms depot explosion in 2014.
In addition, the West is following with concern the medical condition of imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny, which is rapidly deteriorating.

EU Foreign Minister Joseph Burrell said yesterday the Russian army had concentrated more than 100,000 troops on the Ukrainian border and in the Crimean peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014.
However, Burrell said after the meeting of EU foreign ministers that at this time Brussels is not planning further sanctions on Russia or expelling Russian diplomats.
According to Burrell, this is Russia's largest concentration of forces ever on the border with Ukraine.
According to the Pentagon, which did not specify the number of Russian troops deployed within Ukraine's borders, this is the largest force since the outbreak of the conflict in eastern Ukraine in 2014.
A Pentagon spokesman said it was unclear whether the force building was indeed for training purposes as stated by Moscow.
