It is a huge success for Michael Hernek: The 16-year-old won the state competition at “Jugend musiziert” on the tuba.

It's not the end of the line.

Groseisenbach

- It was love at first sight.

When Michael Hernek, then 11 years old, discovered a tuba at an instrument maker, it was clear to him: It had to be.

Five years later he won the state competition “Jugend musiziert” (Jumu) with it.

For the up-and-coming musician Michael Hernek (16), a dream came true with the 1st prize at “Jugend musiziert”.

He really wants to study music and become a professional.

On the way there, a solo tuba award like the one Hernek has just won can't hurt.

Now it goes to the national competition in Bremen

“If you want to study, then you definitely have to take part in Jugend musiziert”, his teacher Oswald Windrich had advised him.

Windrich should know: He is tuba player in the ensemble “Ernst Hutter and the Egerland Musicians”, which is highly valued in brass music circles.

No sooner said than done: after the regional competition, Hernek has now also won the state competition in age category V. But that’s not enough: The award also includes admission to the national competition in Bremen.

The way to get there is tough.

The conditions are completely different in times of Corona.

Instead of “live” and on site, in front of the jury and audience, “Jumu” is currently taking place exclusively as a video competition.

With strict rules.

Hernek overcomes nervousness and shines

So the recording has to be done without a break and without editing.

In addition, Michael first had to find a suitable companion and a suitable room for it.

Because his program is demanding and requires an accompaniment on the piano.

The tuba player had pieces of the highest quality, such as the Concerto No. 1 by Alexej Lebedjew, an Andante and the Rondo from the Concerto for Bass and Piano by Antonio Capuzzi and the 1st movement from the Sonata for Tuba and Piano by Paul Hindemith select.

In the end, he found the concert pianist Maria Lohri-Tymozhynska a suitable accompaniment for the video recording, which is almost 20 minutes long.

Like father, like son: Michael was born with the talent of proud papa Rainer Hernek.

“I was very nervous and also excited to finally be able to show everything I can,” recalls the “Jumu” award winner.

The tension was therefore "immeasurable" after the video was shot and submitted.

It took five weeks until the result was finally there and the success was finally certain.

Michael Hernek could follow in his father's footsteps

The chances of breaking something in the national competition are good for someone like Michael Hernek, who practices on his instrument for five to seven hours a day.

And someone who was born with talent.

Papa Rainer Hernek (49) is not a qualified musician and front man of the "Ludwig Thoma Musikanten" for nothing.

The father plays the drums, but also trombone, tenor horn and baritone horn.

Filius Michael avowedly wants to follow in his footsteps.

His heart beats for brass music too.

"The Egerlanders" are the measure of all things for him.

In addition to some pop and rock music, this is what he prefers to listen to, as the proud award winner reveals.

Michael Hernek is currently playing with the Dachau Boys' Chapel.

He was also able to gain experience with his father's Ludwig Thoma musicians.

The family is proud of "their" winner

Michael Hernek's focus is now on the national competition of “Jugend musiziert”.

Whatever the outcome for him - there is no doubt that the young musician and tuba player will go his own way.

After completing secondary school in Eching, he wants to attend technical college and then study music as soon as possible.

In Munich, Stuttgart or Nuremberg.

Depending on where a suitable professor can be found.

The gifted Filius can be sure of the support of his parents Rainer and Maria.

Everyone in the Hernek house, including the younger brother Thomas (13) who plays the drums, is very proud of the family winner.

Now he's almost there - after a long show of strength.
