The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology announced that Ni Mingxuan, the chief vice president of the University of Science and Technology, will soon be the founding president of the Guangzhou branch of the University of Science and Technology.

The relevant decision has been unanimously approved by the HKUST Council and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) Council. The appointment will take effect after the Ministry of Education officially approves the establishment of HKUST Guangzhou Branch.

Ni Mingxuan will resign as the head and deputy of HKUST, which will take effect on June 1, 2021.

The Science and Technology Conference conducts global recruitment for the first and deputy positions.

In recent years, the Hong Kong government has actively promoted cooperation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and many local universities have entered the Greater Bay Area.

HKUST described that the development plan of HKUST Guangzhou branch is in full swing, and it is starting campus planning and design, faculty recruitment, and enrollment. The goal is to open the school in September 2022.

The University of Science and Technology announced the details and future development of the Guangzhou campus in October 2020.

Ni Mingxuan specializing in computer science and engineering returned to Hong Kong from the United States in 2002

Ni Mingxuan, who was selected as the founding president this time, specializes in computer science and engineering. He obtained a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Purdue University in the United States. Before joining HKUST, he was a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University in the United States.

He joined HKUST in 2002 as the head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and was promoted to the Dean of the Fok Ying Tung Research Institute and Special Assistant to the President from 2010 to 2014.

From 2006 to 2014, he concurrently served as the director of the Institute of Science and Technology. From 2015 to 2019, he served as the academic vice president of the University of Macau. He returned to the University of Science and Technology in 2019 and served as the chief vice president.

Ni Mingxuan has won many awards in international academic circles, such as the Outstanding Contribution Award from the China Computer Society in 2009 and the National Natural Science Award (second prize) from the State Council in 2011.

Between 2006 and 2011, Ni was appointed by the Ministry of Science and Technology as the chief scientist of the National Key Basic Research and Development Program (973 Program).
