International entities such as the UN, the IACHR and Human Rights Watch sent messages of solidarity to the victims of the protests against the Government of President Daniel Ortega that began in Nicaragua on April 18, 2018 against a reform of the pension system, that evolved to demands for changes in the democratic system and that, according to these organizations, left hundreds of deaths, detainees and exiles.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed this Monday on the subject on its social networks.

“In Nicaragua, three years after the start of the protests, impunity and the human rights crisis continue.

The implementation of the recommendations made by Bachelet to the Government is insufficient and the right to peaceful assembly continues to not be guaranteed, "he wrote on Twitter.

In addition, the organization reiterated to the Government of Nicaragua its request to return to the country "to assist the authorities and civil society in the implementation of the recommendations and thus achieve changes that improve the human rights situation."

The Government canceled the invitation to this office in August 2018 and has not yet responded to the request.

Organizations remember the "more than 300 dead" in protests in Nicaragua

For her part, Antonia Urrejola, president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), who coordinated the mission sent to the country in 2018, also expressed a harsh message.

"Nicaragua.

I can't breathe.

This is how more than 300 murdered people happened, it happens to their relatives, political prisoners, human rights defenders, "he said.

Urrejola added that the IACHR is present and sent its tribute to the victims, their families, and "to those who continue to fight for the desired justice."

The Government of Nicaragua has not officially reacted to these messages from international organizations.

We request a comment from the Council of Communication and Citizenship but we are still waiting for a response.

Since 2018, the Government has rejected the reports of the UN and the IACHR.

He argues that they are based on data provided by civil organizations that participated in what he calls an "attempted coup."

The Government acknowledged that 200 people died during the protests, including police officers, but it does not acknowledge the existence of political prisoners.

Meanwhile, relatives of opponents affirm that at least 120 people continue to be detained for protesting against the Government.

Vivanco: Pandemic served the dictatorships of the region 2:09

For his part, Jose Miguel Vivanco, executive director of the Americas division of Human Rights Watch, also through Twitter, pointed out that during the protests “the Ortega regime reacted brutally, leaving more than 300 dead, thousands of injured, hundreds of detainees and many tortured ”.

The United States Embassy in Nicaragua spoke in the same way.

In a statement he wrote: “Nicaragua is in mourning for the lives lost three years ago when peaceful protesters were killed for defending their rights.

The repression continues, political prisoners are still incarcerated.

The diplomatic headquarters added that "free and fair elections will allow Nicaraguans to heal and prosper."
