2021-04-20T04:11:35.593Z

Söder and Laschet continue to fight for the position of candidate for chancellor of the Union. They met in Berlin at a secret summit that night.

Does the special meeting of the CDU federal executive committee bring a decision?

Update from April 19, 5:40 p.m

.: After eight days of power struggle with CSU boss Markus Söder for the candidacy for chancellor, the CDU chairman Armin Laschet is now pushing the pace.

He believes that "everyone has the will to decide it as quickly as possible" - and that "as amicable as possible," he said on Monday at the 22nd Deutsche Bankentag, which was held digitally.

"And we are right in the middle," he added.

Laschet has scheduled a special meeting of the CDU federal executive committee for this Monday evening (6 p.m.).

Chancellor fight of the Union: Söder leaves the decision to the CDU

Update from April 19, 3:19 p.m.:

In the meantime, CSU Markus Söder has also commented on the K question again. In a press conference he made it clear: “The time is ripe.” A decision must now be made, but the ball lies with the CDU, the larger sister party. “Where and how” is decided by the CDU alone, including which body makes the decision. They will "respect" them. Nevertheless, Söder emphasizes in his statement that it was important to get a picture of the mood.

Because Söder makes an "offer" with his willingness, the CDU must decide whether this will be accepted or not.

Regardless of how it ends in the end: Söder repeats that he will continue to work with the CDU "without grudging"

As a possible candidate, Armin Laschet has the "full support and backing of the CSU" if he should be.

And vice versa, Söder hopes it will be the same.

In the evening, the CDU federal executive board meets

(see update from April 19, 1:10 p.m.)

, and there may already be a clear picture, but everything is still open.

Laschet appears live in front of the press - new date for K-question announced in the evening

Update, April 19, 1:10 p.m.:

Armin Laschet is now starting to speak. “The Greens nominated their candidate for Chancellor today. I congratulate Annalena Baerbock on this choice, ”said Laschet. Now you have to "treat each other fairly" - especially in times of the pandemic. An election campaign like the one in the USA should be avoided in Germany, he continues. "It will be a fair, a fresh - sometimes a happy - serious election campaign."

The consequences of the pandemic must be “successfully managed” and “a European Germany shaped”.

Children would have suffered particularly from the pandemic - but every child should "be able to advance in our country," said Laschet.

"We too will soon determine our candidate for chancellor," he also says.

Today at 6 p.m. the CDU federal executive committee should meet again.

He also invited Markus Söder.

“We have to talk to each other a lot.

The goal is for the Union to win this federal election.

How we get there - that is what we will discuss this evening.

I will make a proposal, ”he concludes.

The CDU politician did not announce any more details.

He also did not answer questions from the press in his brief statement.

Because of Söder's announcement?

Laschet rushes ahead surprisingly and makes a statement

Update from April 19, 1:01 p.m.:

Armin Laschet is about to step in front of the cameras.

Did he decide to take this step because of Markus Söder's announcement that he would make a statement at 2 p.m.?

That will be shown in a moment.

The Rhineland-Palatinate CDU state chairwoman Julia Klöckner has meanwhile convened a special meeting of the state executive for Tuesday (April 19).

A CDU spokesman in Mainz announced that representatives of the 36 district associations were also invited.

It will be about the unresolved power struggle for the Union's candidacy for chancellor between Armin Laschet and Markus Söder. The non-public switch is planned before the meeting of the federal executive board so that Klöckner and Baldauf can then bring the result from Rhineland-Palatinate, the said State chairwoman of the Junge Union, Jens Münster.

Klöckner, who is also the CDU federal vice-president, has promised Laschet her support.

The CDU state parliamentary group chairman and top candidate in the state elections on March 14th, Christian Baldauf, has not yet clearly positioned himself.

The national association of the Junge Union favors Söder.

Laschet rushes ahead surprisingly and makes a statement - here live soon

Update from April 19, 12:52 p.m.:

Now things are

happening in quick succession

: Armin Laschet is ahead of Markus Söder. 2 p.m. Söder wants to speak out on the matter of the candidacy for chancellor. But now Laschet will step in front of the microphones at 1 p.m. According to the dpa, his topic is the candidacy for chancellor with the Greens; in the morning they had nominated their co-chair Annalena Baerbock as candidate for chancellor

(see update from April 19, 12.30 p.m.)

. It remains to be seen whether he will say something about his own power struggle - and above all, what.

Update from April 19, 12:33 p.m.:

The situation at the Union seems to have moved. And now Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble seems to intervene. According to information from

Bild

, Schäuble made it clear in a phone call over the weekend, CDU leader Armin Laschet, that he had no choice: he had to reach for the top candidate, otherwise he would not be able to hold his own as party leader. According to the

picture

, there should be considerations in the Laschet camp to proclaim him as a candidate for chancellor without regard to Söder. The CSU boss wants to appear in front of the press on Monday 2 p.m.

CDU veteran Wolfgang Bosbach cannot quite understand that.

In a

world

interview he says: "I've never heard that before, that Laschet can no longer remain chairman." But he also qualifies: "Maybe Armin Laschet sees things differently for himself."

And it gets even more explosive: In the event of a renunciation of the candidacy for chancellor, supporters of Friedrich Merz (CDU) should make the rounds that he could still take over the CDU chairmanship if Laschet has to resign.

How likely this scenario really is remains to be seen in view of the current uncertain situation in the Union.

Markus Söder or Armin Laschet?

While the Union is arguing, the Greens have committed themselves

Update from April 19, 12.30 p.m.:

The Greens have announced their decision: Annalena Baerbock will be candidate for Chancellor of the Greens for the federal election in 2021. At the press conference, Baerbock was asked about her opinion on the power struggle of the Union, Söder vs. Laschet.

She expressed concern.

In view of the current challenges, it is worrying when a ruling party "gets into this vacillation," said Baerbock.

She wishes "Mr. Laschet and Mr. Söder that they come to a mutual decision".

Update from April 19, 10:20 a.m.:

Apparently there shouldn't be a decision on Monday in the power struggle between Söder vs. Laschet for the candidacy for chancellor!

The German Press Agency found out about this from Markus Söder's environment.

As already reported by the

Münchner Merkur *

, there will be no withdrawal from Söder on the question of who will run for the Union as chancellor candidate in the federal elections in September.

Markus Söder or Armin Laschet?

The Union's candidacy for chancellor remains pending

Update from April 19, 9:58 a.m.:

The CSU leadership wants to briefly advise on Monday about the current status of clarifying the Union's candidacy for chancellor.

It should be about how to proceed.

According to Merkur * information, the CSU Presidium will meet at 1 p.m. for deliberations.

At 2 p.m., Markus Söder and General Secretary Markus Blume will then give a press conference.

Update from April 19, 9:30 a.m.:

Markus Söder is on his way back to Bavaria, while the CDU chairman Armin Laschet advises on Monday morning in Berlin on how to proceed in clarifying the candidacy for chancellor.

According to a dpa photographer, Laschet's limousines were initially in front of the Hessian state representation.

At first, nothing was known with whom Laschet was consulting and about the content of the discussions.

Chancellor showdown of the Union: Markus Söder on his way back after an overnight consultation with Laschet

Update from April 19, 9 a.m .:

Markus Söder (CSU) is already on his way to Bavaria again after the unsuccessful meeting with Armin Laschet (CDU) in Berlin.

The German press agency learned this on Monday morning.

Update from April 19, 8:45 a.m.:

CSU politician Klaus Holetschek sees clear support for his boss Markus Söder on the K question.

"You can now see that there is broad support for Markus Söder from the CDU base," said the Bavarian Minister of Health on Monday in the ZDF "morning magazine".

The decision is about what people want.

How the power struggle between Söder and CDU boss Armin Laschet could be resolved, Holetschek could not say.

It will be shown "in the course of the day" which bodies decide.

Chancellor candidate of the Union: Nightly deliberations in Berlin without result

Update from April 19, 8:23 a.m.:

The Laschet-Söder consultation took up the K question until late at night.

As the

picture

reports, the talks ended around 1:15 a.m.

CDU leader Armin Laschet was one of the first to leave the Bundestag building.

The CSU chairman Markus Söder followed ten minutes later.

Update from April 19, 7.30 a.m.:

The decision on the Union's candidacy for chancellor continues.

Even after a night meeting between Armin Laschet (CDU) and Markus Söder (CSU) in Berlin, there have been no results so far.

The Union is currently under heavy pressure five months before the 2021 federal election.

In addition, the Greens, currently the strongest force behind the Union, will present their choice this Monday: Annalena Baerbock or Robert Habeck.

Night meeting in Berlin because of the Union's candidacy for chancellor: Armin Laschet and Markus Söder

Update from April 19, 4.58 a.m

.: After an unsuccessful meeting between Armin Laschet and Markus Söder on Monday night, the outcome of the power struggle for the Union's candidacy for chancellor is eagerly awaited.

According to information from the

dpa,

the

two chairmen of the CDU and CSU

met with their closest confidante late on Sunday evening for almost three and a half hours in the Bundestag building in Berlin.

Initially, nothing could be learned about the content discussed there and the further process.

The meeting in the Chancellery was the preliminary climax in the Union dispute, which has been worsening for a week.

Should the rivals fail to come to an agreement this Monday as well, who will lead the CDU and CSU as candidates for chancellor in the election on September 26, it could result in a decision in the Bundestag faction on Tuesday.

Should the Bavarian Prime Minister actually prevail in the end, Laschet would be severely damaged just three months after his election as CDU chief.

FDP Vice Wolfgang Kubicki said he was “stunned” about what was happening in the CDU.

"A party that declares in large parts or in all its breadth that we cannot win an election with our chairman has to look for a new chairman," he said on Sunday evening in the "Bild" policy talk "The right questions".

Hamburg's First Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) sharply criticized the Union in the same panel discussion and attested to its lack of ability to act in the corona pandemic due to the internal power struggle.

Söder vs. Laschet: Union power struggle even after night meetings in Berlin still unresolved

Update from April 19, 1:47 a.m.:

Markus Söder and Armin Laschet's meeting in the Bundestag building is over.

According to dpa information, the two negotiated just under three and a half hours to clarify the question of the chancellor candidate.

A result could not be achieved at the nightly secret summit, however.

Nothing was known about how to proceed in the power struggle, which has been going on for a week.

There may be a fight vote in the parliamentary group on Tuesday if no agreement can be reached by then.

This would be historic.

It is possible that there will also be a special meeting of the CDU board on Monday to resolve the K question amicably.

However, according to dpa information, there was still no invitation to such a meeting on Sunday afternoon.

Exit open.

It

would be a kind of vote of confidence: If Laschet loses here, he would probably be so damaged that the CDU could look for a new chairman straight away.

The current problem: After the long chancellorships of Merkel and Kohl, there is no procedure how the joint candidate for chancellor is determined.

Should voting always take place in the parliamentary group in the future, the only joint body?

In a new body, just for the K question?

Or via a member survey?

Update from April 19, 1:11 a.m.:

Apparently, Markus Söder and Armin Laschet actually met in the Bundestag late on Sunday evening.

At least both have arrived in the Bundestag building, as reported by the dpa.

Anything but a showdown on the Union's K question would be a surprise under these circumstances.

Showdown on the K question that night?

Söder and Laschet in Berlin

Update from April 18, 11:51 p.m.:

And Armin Laschet has also arrived in Berlin. A camera team from RTL / n-tv filmed Laschet late on Sunday evening when entering the North Rhine-Westphalian state representation. When asked if there was a decision, he did not answer.

Laschet and Söder had spoken and negotiated all day. Also in the evening it was said: Both continue to hold on to their candidacy. The decision could now be made in the next few hours, because, according to

Merkur

information

, Söder is sitting

with the CSU state group leader Alexander Dobrindt and Secretary General Markus Blume. It is quite possible that the CDU parliamentary group chairman Ralph Brinkhaus will meet with Laschet and CDU general secretary Paul Ziemiak or that all six will consult together. After all: Ziemiak was spotted when he entered the Bundestag.

More and more speaks for Markus Söder.

In addition to the Junge Union, the state chiefs of Saxony-Anhalt, Saarland and, indirectly, Saxony also stood behind Söder.

Michael Kretschmer (Saxony, CDU) did not speak out clearly in favor of the CSU boss in the ARD, but pointed out that Söder had a lot of advocates in the Saxon CDU, which he could "not suppress".

According to information from around the world, the Lower Saxony CDU also spoke “very predominantly” in favor of Söder late on Sunday evening.

This seems to be the hardest blow for Laschet so far because of the membership of the regional association.

“The two candidates had enough time to come to a decision.

This did not happen and now we are forced to position ourselves.

This was done with a clear majority for Markus Söder, ”said JU boss Tilman Kuban.

According to the JU, 14 of their 18 state chairmen spoke out in favor of Söder in the video conference of the JU state chiefs.

Laschet hardly wants to wait for a decision in the parliamentary group meeting on Tuesday.

A clear Söder majority had recently emerged there.

Update from April 18, 9:57 p.m

.: While Markus Söder has now arrived in Berlin, Armin Laschet should

not have arrived in the capital yet,

according to

Focus Online

.

According to

BR

information,

a meeting with Laschet is

currently not planned

for this evening

.

It is possible that the CDU executive committee will convene a special meeting on Monday morning.

Laschet vs. Söder: who will be a candidate for chancellor?

Young Union is mostly behind Söder

Update from April 18, 9:01 p.m.:

The Junge Union (JU) met on Sunday evening in a switching conference.

As has now become known, in the internal power struggle for the candidacy for chancellor, the party’s youngsters are with a large majority behind CSU chairman Markus Söder.

According to JU information, 14 regional associations spoke out in favor of Söder with a clear majority.

Baden-Württemberg and Schleswig-Holstein as medium-sized associations as well as Brandenburg reported a “mixed mood”, they abstained.

The JU North Rhine-Westphalia, which provides more than a quarter of all JU members, spoke out in favor of CDU boss Armin Laschet as a candidate for chancellor.

The JU has a total of 18 regional associations.

Söder or Laschet?

Söder landed in Berlin on Sunday evening for further discussions

Update from April 18, 8:12 p.m.:

Markus Söder has now landed in Berlin.

According to information from

RTL

and

Bild

, the Bavarian Prime Minister landed at 7.30 p.m. in a private jet at Berlin's Willy Brandt Airport from Nuremberg.

How

was reported in the

ARD Tagesschau

, Söder traveled to Berlin to meet with Laschet for further discussions.

There were initially no comments from the CSU and CDU.

Laschet vs. Söder: Berlin CDU chairwoman: "As a candidate for chancellor, the majority wants Markus Söder"

Update from April 18, 7:52 p.m

.: The Berlin CDU chairman Kai Wegner said on Sunday evening in the

ARD

with a view to the CDU: “As a candidate for chancellor of the CDU and CSU, the majority wants Markus Söder.” He brought a face-saving option for Laschet into play: The party presidencies of the CDU and CSU should jointly vote for Söder as candidate for chancellor, Laschet could then remain a “strong party leader”.

K-Question: Söder probably on the plane to Berlin

Update from April 18, 7:04 p.m

.: According to information from the TV station

RTL

, Markus Söder is currently on a plane from Munich to Berlin.

Is a decision imminent on the K question between Armin Laschet and Markus Söder?

It is currently unclear what will lead the Bavarian Prime Minister to the capital.

However, it is considered possible that a special meeting of the CDU board will be convened.

Söder or Laschet?

Will there be a fight vote in the Union on K-Question?

Update from April 18, 5:29 p.m

.: In a few hours the self-imposed deadline for a decision on a candidate for chancellor of the Union will pass. According to

image

information, a decision should no longer take place on Sunday. It is unclear whether this decision will be made on Monday or whether there will be a vote in the Bundestag on Tuesday. From Union circles on Saturday (April 17th) it was said that Laschet and Söder were in good and constructive talks. In the parliamentary group, Markus Söder is a favorite.

Union politicians, meanwhile, urged a decision by Monday at the latest. The head of the CDU regional association Hamburg, Christoph Ploß, told the

Rheinische Post

: “I expect the party leaders to present a joint solution by tomorrow. Should an agreement not be reached, only the Bundestag parliamentary group, as the only joint committee of the CDU and CSU, can decide on the candidacy for chancellor. ”The CDU Bundestag member Oliver Grundmann and CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt also agreed. “The clock is ticking incessantly,” Grundmann told

Welt

.

But critical voices also emerged, such as Carsten Linnemann, the Union's deputy parliamentary group leader.

He spoke out against a fight vote in the

newspapers of the Funke media group

: "Otherwise there is a risk of opening trenches that are difficult to fill again."

K question about Söder / Laschet: Agreement between the Greens and the SPD

In contrast to the Union, the Greens show themselves as a unity: On Monday, the federal executive board will propose who of the party leaders, Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck, should take over the candidacy for chancellor in the federal election.

The final decision will be made at the Green Party Congress from June 11th to 13th, but approval is considered certain - regardless of the

nomination.

The Greens had also left the decision on the candidacy to their two party leaders, who wanted to come to an understanding between themselves before the decision of the board.

The SPD had already decided on Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz as the candidate for election on September 26th.

Former CSU member of the state parliament speaks out against Söder

Update from April 18, 3:47 p.m

.: Actually, it should be made today, the decision on the Union's K question - Söder or Laschet? A self-set deadline will probably pass without a decision. Meanwhile, however, more and more others are positioning themselves for it. On Sunday evening (April 18), the state executive in Lower Saxony and the Junge Union will discuss the K question independently of each other. Across from the

Sueddeutsche Zeitung

the former CSU member of the state parliament, Hermann Imhof, spoke out against Markus Söder.

He even asked the party chairman to withdraw the application for chancellor.

He is quoted as follows: “I very much wish Mr. Söder that he gains the insight to put his urgent ambitions aside - in responsibility for the whole Union and in consideration of the personal situation of Armin Laschet.

That would be a real sign of humility and human greatness. "

Imhof went on to say that a Federal Chancellor must be a “human role model”, “also in terms of culture and style” and display an integrative leadership style.

Traits that he missed in Söder.

Markus Söder or Armin Laschet?

Lower Saxony's CDU chairman calls for a special session

Update from April 18, 2:53 p.m.:

The power struggle for the candidacy for chancellor between Markus Söder and Armin Laschet is

getting worse

.

Lower Saxony's CDU chairman Bernd Althusmann called the members of his state board as well as the district and district chairmen together for online consultations on Sunday at 8 p.m., according to information from the German Press Agency.

He justified the special session with the "current situation on the K question".

It is expected that Althusmann wants to get a picture of the mood of his party base.

Update from April 18, 1:43 p.m.:

The Junge Union wants to commit to one of the two possible chancellor candidates on Sunday evening.

According to the RND, the state chairmen of the JU want to interconnect in a video conference at 8 p.m.

Söder and Laschet continue to argue: Agreement on Sunday probably broke

Update from April 18, 12:57 p.m.:

Today, Sunday, the agreement deadline that Armin Laschet and Markus Söder had given themselves expires.

But apparently this deadline will pass without the Union naming a new candidate for Chancellor.

According to

image

information, the CSU and CDU bosses will not agree on Sunday.

Although they are still in contact and in conversation, they are currently not assuming that an agreement will be reached on Sunday, according to the newspaper.

This also means that the Junge Union will probably take the side of a candidate on Monday.

Here Söder is said to have more supporters than his opponent.

Laschet and Söder argue about the candidacy for chancellor: the deadline is running out

Update vom 18.
