Derek Chauvin worked for the Minneapolis Police Department for more than 18 years.

Then, on May 25, 2020, he was recorded kneeling on George Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes before the latter died.

Chauvin was fired from the Minneapolis Police Department and charged with multiple counts of murder in the death of George Floyd.

He had 18 prior complaints against him

Before kneeling on Floyd's neck, Chauvin was the subject of 18 complaints filed against him with the Minneapolis Police Department's Office of Internal Affairs.

Police confirmed that the complaints were filed, but did not detail why they were filed or what implications they had.

Only two of the 18 complaints were "closed with discipline," according to a public summary by Internal Affairs from the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD).

Both men worked security at the El Nuevo Rodeo club in Minneapolis' Third Ward, former club owner Maya Santamaría told CNN.

Floyd worked some Tuesdays as an additional security guard.

Chauvin worked as an off-duty police officer for the club for nearly 17 years, Santamaría said.

"I wouldn't describe them as if they knew each other," Santamaría told CNN's Josh Campbell in an interview.
