Correct position:
To make sure that you are easily recognizable, the face should not only be spot-lit.
It is therefore best to place the light about 30 centimeters above eye level.
A ring light can help here, as it illuminates well and evenly from all sides.
Ring light instead of several light sources:
One light alone can provide sufficient brightness, but it also casts shadows.
To avoid shadows, you can of course set up two lamps at the same time, but these also require electricity, and you often don't have a second lamp at hand.
With a ring light you have neither shadows nor multiple light sources.
The position at the window:
The natural light through the window often provides ideal lighting for video conferences. However, the position on the window is very important. You should never have the window behind you, otherwise you can hardly be seen. In the best case, the light comes from the side. Window light behind the monitor can quickly lead to headaches due to the different lighting conditions.
The right light temperature:
Depending on the light source, there are different light colors or color temperatures, which are specified in Kelvin. The lower the number, the more orange the light appears. The higher the number, the bluer the light appears. A candle, for example, has a color temperature of 1,500 Kelvin and tends to provide orange light. Most LED lights produce a light color of up to 5,600 Kelvin. The scale ranges up to around 12,000 Kelvin. With a color temperature of 5,600 Kelvin you are on the safe side.
Soft light:
Indirect light or soft light are a great help for video calls.
Instead of direct light, this is scattered, for example, by a lampshade.
This leads to softer shadows.
Shining the lamp on a white wall can also soften the light.
Various factors are important for the right lighting in a video conference: the right position, the color temperature or the light source.
