Officer Derek Chubin was convicted tonight (Tuesday) of all three charges for the murder of George Floyd in the city of Minneapolis last year.

The jury convicted Chubin of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter.

The jury reached their decision after holding discussions on the issue in the last two days at the end of the summary of arguments at trial, and after failing to reach an agreement yesterday.

In the past three weeks, the jury has heard testimonies from 45 people, including passers-by, police and medical experts.

The trial of 45-year-old Chubin, who pinned his knee to Floyd's neck until he died on May 25, 2020, opened on March 29.

Chubin pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

While the United States awaits sentencing, police departments are preparing for mass demonstrations.

Thousands of National Guard soldiers were stationed in Minneapolis, the city where Floyd was killed, and a state of emergency was declared in the area.

Minnesota lawmaker Tim Waltz said today that he is "grateful to our colleagues in Ohio and Nebraska for their willingness to help us with the reinforcement of police forces, who continue to do their job to keep our communities quiet."

250 National Guard soldiers were also stationed in Washington, D.C.

One spokesman for the organization said the forces were on the scene only to "support" the local police so that their presence would not be felt or seen unless required to do so.

Also in other places, including Chicago and Los Angeles, police departments were pre-deployed with increased forces.

U.S. President Joe Biden addressed the trial today, saying he "prays that the verdict will be the right verdict." He said he called Floyd's family yesterday and told them "you can only imagine the stress and anxiety they feel." According to him, the trial and its results are of "crucial" significance.

"They are a good family and they call for peace and tranquility, no matter what the verdict," the president said of Floyd's family. Biden told reporters that he allows himself to comment on the trial just because he has already moved on to the jury's decision. This is despite the fact that the judge conducting the trial, Peter Kehil, said yesterday that it would be better if elected officials did not express their opinion publicly on the issue, so as not to influence the jury's judgment.

"I wish the elected officials would stop talking about this case, especially in a way that does not respect the rule of law, the judiciary and our functioning," Kehill said after sending the jury to begin the deliberations.

The president has repeatedly condemned Floyd's death, but until the current statement has refused to comment directly on Chubin's trial.

According to White House sources, they believed it would not be right for the president to discuss the issue in public before a decision has been reached.

According to White House spokeswoman Jen Saki, the president had no intention of influencing the outcome of the trial with his comments.

"As he noted, the jury went to the verdict so he talked about it, but I expect him to say more - once there is a verdict, and I do not intend to bring further analysis of what he meant," Saki said at a White House press briefing.

Asked if the president's remarks could lead to unrest in Minneapolis and the rest of the United States if the jury does not reach the "right verdict," the ruling said that regardless of the outcome of the trial, Biden has consistently called for peace.

"Our focus, while working with national and local authorities, is to provide a place for peaceful protest, and it will be consistent regardless of the outcome, the ruling," she said.

Chubin's knee was pressed to his neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds.

The penalty imposed on a person convicted of a second-degree murder in the state of Minnesota is 40 years in prison, and up to 25 years for a third-degree murder.

But the penal guidelines state that Chubin will face 12 and a half years in prison if convicted of the charges.

Killing has a maximum penalty of ten years.
