As of April 28, all travelers who arrive in Puerto Rico and who do not present a covid-19 test with a negative result in a period of 72 hours before their arrival will be fined US $ 300.

The fine will cease to have effect once the traveler submits the negative result to the BioPortal digital system within a maximum term of 48 hours after arrival on the island.

Passengers must remain in quarantine until they have the diagnosis from the test.

Once the result has been uploaded to the government portal, the system will consider the traveler's requirements met and will eliminate the fine.

This is provided by an administrative order signed this Monday by Carlos Mellado, secretary of the Department of Health.

“We are complying with Governor Pedro Pierluisi's mandate to establish more restrictive measures that allow us to control the spread of the virus and, in this way, slow the rise in infections.

We are seeing the behavior of the disease a little more aggressive, which prompts us to take changes that allow us to protect life, health and medical-hospital resources, "said Mellado López through a press release.

Passengers whose molecular tests are positive for COVID-19 will have to assume their medical and stay expenses and will have to stay isolated for the time determined by the Department of Health.

The administrative order also allows visitors to be tested without the need for a referral and a list of labs will be provided to do so.

The rule orders laboratories to give priority to travelers who arrive in Puerto Rico and go to the laboratory to perform the PCR test.

On the other hand, the Health department clarified that people who have recently recovered from covid-19 can reach the island without presenting a coronavirus test.

However, they must attach evidence of their recovery in the digital traveler's declaration.

Mellado warned that “every passenger who acts against the orders and guidelines of the Department of Health, will be imposed an administrative fine of no more than US $ 5,000.

In the case of a second occasion, the fine may be up to a maximum of US $ 10,000 ”.

Until April 19, the Department of Health reported that in Puerto Rico there have been 108,864 confirmed cases of covid-19.

In addition, 109,093 suspected cases, 14,185 probable cases and 2,207 reported deaths were recorded.
