Crowd: "Guilty!"
The jubilation in Minneapolis is great: In the trial of the death of the black George Floyd, the court found the white ex-police officer Derek Chauvin guilty - on all three counts.
Quantity: »All three points! All three points! "
Unlike the cheering crowd in front of the courthouse, Chauvin took note of the verdict without moving.
The judge read the guilty verdict for second degree manslaughter and second and third degree murder.
The ex-police officer was arrested immediately after the verdict was pronounced.
The judge will not determine the exact sentence for a few weeks - according to experts, chauvin could get up to 40 years in prison.
The twelve jurors came to their unanimous verdict in less than eleven hours.
There has never been a guilty verdict of this kind in the USA.
Philipp Oehmke, DER SPIEGEL:
"Most of the known cases of the killing of black citizens by the police either never came to the prosecution or ended in a so-called" mistrial ", ie a wrongful trial or even an acquittal. The fact that a white police officer is sentenced to up to 40 years in prison for such an act, even with the participation of other police officers, his colleagues, is truly unique. "
Since the murder, George Floyd's name has been symbolic of the nationwide protests against racism and police violence in the United States.
The verdict is a milestone for the Black Lives Matter movement.
Philipp Oehmke, DER SPIEGEL:
“Nevertheless, one must not be mistaken: during the trial alone, during the last three weeks alone, more than 60 people in the United States were shot dead by the police. Last week here in Minneapolis when a white policewoman shot a 20-year-old black boy just ten miles from the court. "
Following the verdict, US President Joe Biden phoned George Floyd's family and went public with Vice President Kamala Harris:
Joe Biden, US President:
“It was a murder in full light of day and it ripped off the shoes of the whole world. So that she sees the systemic racism that the Vice-President has just spoken of. The systemic racism that is an eyesore on the soul of our nation, the knee on the neck of justice for black Americans, the deep fear and trauma. The pain, exhaustion that black and brown Americans experience every single day. "
"It was a murder in full light of day and it tore the world's shoe flaps off. So that they could see the systemic racism that the Vice President was talking about. The systemic racism that is an eyesore on the soul of our nation, that Knees on the neck of justice for black Americans, the deep fear and trauma. The pain, exhaustion that black and brown Americans experience every single day. "
In the days leading up to the verdict, the mood in Minneapolis was tense: shops were locked and police stations turned into fortresses.
The National Guard patrolled the streets.
But the feared protests did not materialize after the verdict.
Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington was also quiet in the evening and at night. The fight against racism and police violence in the USA continues after the verdict.
