Entering April, after Ching Ming and Easter, this year's Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) will be in front of the students!

Although the remaining time is not too much, as long as the students use the time in a planned way and work hard in preparation for the exam, although the world has not turned around, I believe that I can win points in the examination field and choose the best.

When dealing with the English Language Test Paper 2 (Paper 2), many students like to use some extremely difficult vocabulary (vocabulary) when they are writing pen and composition, and they may not even understand the vocabulary. Off) Check out your ability to use words; I think that by doing so, you can please the markers and get high scores.

It is true that an appropriate vocabulary size is necessary, but this does not mean that the use of difficult and rare vocabulary is a sign of high English use ability and a high score.

Every Form 6 student should understand that the vocabulary he masters can be roughly divided into two types: "active vocabulary" and "passive vocabulary".

The so-called "active vocabulary" (active vocabulary) refers to those vocabulary that we can both explain and use.

I think most of the sixth form students who take the secondary school diploma exam can say the meanings of the words go, kill, handsome, rain and sweet, and can use these words to make sentences into the text. These words are what the author said. "Active vocabulary" (active vocabulary).

However, if students are required to explain the meaning of allege, attempt, essential, endeavour, and negotiate, they may be able to cope with it; but if they need to use these words in conversation or written conversation, then not every student will be able to use them. , It's easy to do.

The vocabulary that we will explain, but we are not so confident about using it, is what I call "passive vocabulary" (passive vocabulary).

Obviously, for every student, the vocabulary he finds difficult is his "passive vocabulary" (passive vocabulary).

Because we don't fully grasp the meaning, part of speech and usage of these words, we don't know how to properly construct sentences into the text.

In fact, many students "encounter" these difficult but rarely used vocabularies in the Chinese-English Dictionary.

These Chinese-English dictionaries often don't list example sentences to demonstrate how to use these words correctly, so the students just rely on the rough explanations in the dictionary to swallow the retrieved words directly into the text.

This approach is actually very dangerous. For example, the word "admittance" has several corresponding words in English: acknowledge, confess, recognize, admit, and avow, etc.; but they cannot be used interchangeably. of.

We can say: We acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated 15 April.

Your

letter dated 15 April

has been received.

The “acknowledgement” in the above sentence is a formal official document, expressing public recognition so that there will be a case for investigation in the future. It is not suitable for students to substitute other words listed above at will to avoid making jokes.

For example, the two verbs (prove and justify) are interpreted as "prove" in most English-Chinese dictionaries (English-Chinese Dictionary), but the verb "justify" has more meaning than prove, which means to "prove". The practice and attitude of certain things are appropriate, reasonable and correct, for example:

Nothing can justify spilling innocent blood.

No matter what, it is wrong to spill the blood of the innocent.

Since the verb justify has the meaning of right or wrong judgment, we must not use prove to replace justify in this sentence.

Let us look at the following sentence:

Do the ends justify the means? Do the ends justify the means

?

I believe that when everyone responds to this question, the answer must be "No"; but if we use the verb "prove" here, it would be a joke!

Have students ever thought about how many English vocabulary (vocabulary) should be understood as a sixth form student?

Two thousand?

Ten thousand?

Is it five hundred?

If students want to achieve good results in the secondary school diploma examination, I am afraid that they need to master five to six thousand words to be enough!

In fact, knowing a few more vocabulary can not only improve our expressive skills, improve our composition level, but also improve our reading speed and increase our hit rate in Paper 1 and Paper 3.

Take Paper 1 Part B1 in 2020 as an example. If you don’t understand the four verbs (inform, discuss, evaluate, and enter), then you will not be able to answer question 31 in the test paper:

The main purpose of the text is to…

A. inform

B. discuss

C. evaluate

D. entertain

By the same token, if your personal vocabulary bank does not have the following adjectives (adjectives), then Question 59 in the paper 1 Part B2 of the 2020 paper will also make you at a loss, and you don’t know how to estimate it. "From:

What is the tone of Norton's response to P. Smith?

A. bitter

B. amusing

C. reflective

D. supportive

It can be seen that students must learn more new words in normal days, master more English vocabulary (vocabulary), and maximize their personal vocabulary bank (personal vocabulary bank).

Students who hope to achieve good results in the first volume of Paper 2 composition need to expand their personal "active vocabulary bank" (active vocabulary bank) in order to write with confidence and achieve good results.

Different from Chinese belonging to the "Sino-Tibetan Language Family" (Sino-Tibetan Language Family), English belonging to the "Indo-European Language Family" (Indo-European Language Family) is mainly composed of Pinyin groups of characters. Therefore, for many Hong Kong students In other words, many vocabularies are very similar in spelling, which is easy to be confused. For example, two adverbs (adverbs), aboard and abroad, are composed of 6 identical English letters; but just put the English letter "r" If you change the position, these two characters are very different in pronunciation, meaning and usage.

Aboard means "boarding on transportation", so when we take a plane, we often hear pilots or flight attendants announcing to passengers via the broadcast system:

Ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome aboard Qantas Airways flight 888 bound for Sydney.

Passengers:

Welcome to take

Qantas Airways flight 888 to Sydney

, Australia

Abroad means "abroad" or "going overseas", which has a completely different meaning from aboard!

Perhaps the following two examples can help readers understand the usage of the word broad:

Studying abroad has become increasingly popular over the past decades in Mainland China

.

Michael has two grown-up children and both of them live abroad

.

In order to help students distinguish these easily confusing words, some common "commonly confused words" are listed below to help students distinguish their spelling and usage differences.

Readers may wish to take a moment to look at these easily confused words and try to figure out their usage through example sentences, so as to better prepare for the secondary school diploma exam, so that they can be more confident in their spelling when writing.
