Freising

- The statistics present a frightening picture: the probability of experiencing violence is almost four times as high for children with a disability as for children without a handicap - especially for girls.

As part of a digital series of events on the subject of child protection, the member of the state parliament Johannes Becher (Greens) from Freising went with experts and around 40 interested parties in search of solutions for improved protective measures.

The subject of child protection is important for Becher as spokesman for the parliamentary group for early childhood education and as vice-chairman of the state parliament's children's commission.

In his opinion, it is precisely when there is such a high probability of violent crimes that one should finally take a look.

Much has come to a head in the pandemic year

The state government's disability officer, Holger Kiesel, shares this opinion, since, in his experience, the problem of violence during the Corona crisis has worsened due to various restrictions. Much, said Kiesel, is now happening in secret. Families were often severely stressed even before the pandemic, for example due to the struggle for adequate medical care. However, the corona crisis would have significantly increased the potential for conflict. However, there are also problems with violence in institutions: Employees overwhelmed by time pressure and lack of staff are increasingly reaching their limits. At the moment, however, one thing in particular is awkward: Due to the pandemic, communication with authorities as a supervisory institution is often severely restricted. But right now that would be extremely important: "Take a look inside families and institutions."

The help in life

“It is our job”, so also the deputy chairwoman of the Lebenshilfe Bayern, Monika Haslberger, “to take care of these children.” For the institutions of the Lebenshilfe a care guideline would apply, in addition, every employee is obliged to apply once a year to take part in a training course that focuses on preventing child welfare being endangered.

Children with disabilities should definitely be taken seriously when there are complaints of any kind.

Her wish: "Better to say too much than to keep quiet!" For this, child strengthening programs are useful, suggested Petra Straubinger from AMYNA eV.

According to Becher, victims would have to speak to up to seven people before they could be heard in the event of sexual violence, for example.

The politic

The social policy spokeswoman for the Landtag Greens, Kerstin Celina, appealed: "We have to make sure that it doesn't happen, because no child can protect themselves alone!" Case of abuse.

The parent representative

According to Kiesel, a lot of violence could be prevented if excessive demands were dealt with differently.

The chairman of the State Parents' Council, Klaus Grantner, also pointed out possibilities - for example, the use of preventive care, which is an opportunity to counteract overload.

In addition, much of his opinion would simply not be communicated by the health insurance companies, although "the money is there".

The right to help, says Grantner, is still a step in justification.
