Sustainability is a much discussed topic in Gmund.

The municipal council has now been presented with the current situation of the municipality in terms of energy optimization, energy efficiency and the planning necessary for the future in the form of an energy use plan.

Gmund - Gmund had already taken a first step with their contract for energy coaching, and in 2019 the contract for an energy use plan (ENP) was placed with the company Energiewende Oberland (EWO) - Competence Center Energy EKO eV Andreas Scharli and Christiane Regauer presented the results to the local council .

Energy use plan for Gmund: That is the situation

Overall, at 55.1 percent, heat accounts for the largest share of energy demand. The most important thing here is to start. This is followed by electricity (23.1 percent) and traffic (21.8 percent). Around 67,000 megawatt hours (MWh) are drawn from the grid in Gmund. Only a small part, 7.4 percent, can be covered by renewable energies (hydropower, combined heat and power plants, photovoltaics and biomass). “There's room for improvement,” says Regauer. The industry consumes the most electricity (84.01 percent), including the paper mills. Regarding heat demand (a total of 160 112 MWh): Here, the share of renewable energies is 6.7 percent (including paper mills). Heating oil and natural gas continue to play the most important role. According to the ENP, electricity (excluding the paper mill) has the greatest potential to meet demand with renewable energy.

Based on the available data from 2015 to 2017, it can be seen that the electricity consumption is highest in the building yard, followed by the Dürnbach fire brigade and the town hall.

When it comes to heat requirements, the Seeglas lido is the front runner, followed by the vhs Gmund-Dürnbach, the building yard and the Dürnbach fire brigade.

Energy use plan: possible measures

According to Andreas Scharli, the community will be approached by the heating substation of the gym, where the heat losses are enormous. If the system is optimized, however, high subsidies are possible. A photovoltaic system (PV) on the building yard roof is “very useful”. In addition to roofs, there would be a PV open space, for example next to the railway line between Finsterwald and Moosrain. Scharli also brought up PV films on the flat roofs of the paper factory or the bottling plant of the brewery, on the new cattle breeding hall including e-charging station and carports at the Seeglas car park with a PV roof. Companies are already thinking about using the waste heat from the paper mills. Finally, there are private houses, where there are different models for the use of different energy systems.

Michael Huber (Greens) wanted to know how high the renovation rate is currently. According to Scharli, it is 0.7 percent. With 20 to 30 percent funding, now is a good time to take action. Georg Rabl (FWG) thought it was important to actively approach the homeowner and to tackle areas selectively. Johann Schmid (SPD) referred to the energy working group and was in favor of reducing heat losses first. Third Mayor Christine Zierer (FWG) appealed to the community to act as a role model: “Let's start with ourselves.” The information remained. The ENP is now also to be distributed in print. Concrete measures were not decided.
