Two storks have found a home in Dießen on a specially made, 12.5 meter high eyrie.

They are now an attraction for the people of Dießen and their "landlords" Franz Sanktjohanser and Renate Alton, who spent 5,000 euros on them.

Dießen

- Living space in Dießen is scarce. This also applies to storks and their families. So that not all giant birds migrate to the neighboring Raisting, known as the stork village, haulier and councilor Franz Sanktjohanser has set up a 12.5 meter high eyrie in his garden in the fishery. The stork's nest has been moved into so that Sanktjohanser (70) and his partner Renate Alton (69) can now observe a pair of white storks at close range that have found each other again after wintering in Africa at the Ammersee.

For the offspring, which will hopefully soon be expected, the stork couple diligently brings branches and moss so that the mother stork can hatch her eggs well protected.

Sanktjohanser is hoping for many chicks here and in the other two nests in Dießen.

One is on the Spitzenbergerhaus on Herrenstrasse, the other on the roof of the Liebfrauenschule near Marienmünster.

After the stork brood has been decimated by constant rain, hail and sheep cold in recent years, Sanktjohanser is hopeful that many young birds will hatch and survive this year.

For long-term observation, they are ringed by experts from the State Association for Bird Protection.

Once the parents have flown out, the Dießen fire service goes up to the little ones who cannot yet fly and flee.

The neighbors have long got used to the turtling and clattering of the storks. Sanktjohanser has set up a bench especially for the onlookers. Inquisitive children can go on their balcony with Renate Alton and are even closer. The stork foster parents patiently answer all questions, for example about their eating habits: “The storks fly off early in the morning to look for food. Frogs, tadpoles, earthworms, grasshoppers, lizards and even mice are their favorite foods. ”Once the young have hatched, the parents put the delicacies in their throat pouches and bring them to the young. Another question that is often asked is why storks only nest high on roof ridges, chimneys or special clumps. Sanktjohanser: “With their wingspan of a good two meters, the storks fly to their nests from below. To start, they let the four to five kilogram birds drop a little out of the nest and only then open their wings to sail away. ”From above, enemies such as the red kite or storks competing for the nest are easier to fend off.

Sanktjohanser and Alton had their private eyrie cost around 5000 euros.

A structural plan and a building permit were necessary for this.

The neighbors subsequently contributed 1,600 euros.

The iron bar and basket are custom-made.

It was set into a deep foundation and fixed with five cubic meters of concrete.

The couple doesn't regret a cent for investing in giving storks a home.
