As talks between the United States and Iran in Vienna enter critical stages, suspicions and disputes between the government in Jerusalem and the Biden administration over its policy toward Tehran are growing, according to talks with senior Israeli officials.

An air train of senior Israeli officials will land in Washington next week for talks on the Iranian issue.

Among the Israeli officials who will fly to the American capital will be National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat, who is leading the talks with the White House on the nuclear agreement with Iran.

In addition, Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi, the head of the IDF's Intelligence Division, Tamir Heiman, and the head of the Mossad, Yossi Cohen, will fly to Washington.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold a limited discussion in his office tomorrow (Thursday), with the participation of Defense Minister Bnei Gantz, Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi and all senior Israeli officials who are expected to leave for the United States.

The purpose of the discussion will be to formulate the policy and align the positions that each of the senior executives will present to its American counterparts.

A senior Israeli source close to the matter said that the talks that had taken place so far with the administration were mostly by phone or video calls.

According to him, Israel will know how big the gap is in positions with the United States on the Iranian issue only after the face-to-face discussions with senior Biden government officials next week.

"We do not think that everything is lost, and as long as we have the opportunity to voice our position, we are going to try in the hope that we will succeed," the senior Israeli official said.

Avoid reruns

During the talks that led to the nuclear deal in 2015, the gaps in positions between the Netanyahu government and the Obama administration turned into a public confrontation that led to a rift in relations between the two countries.

Following the inauguration of President Joe Biden in January, both senior members of the new government and senior members of the Israeli government expressed a desire to avoid a repeat of this crisis.

But not sure it can be prevented.

Israel and the United States have so far held two rounds of talks on strategy with Iran.

The contacts took place in video calls between an Israeli team led by Ben Shabbat and an American team led by National Security Adviser White House Jake Sullivan.

Two senior Israeli officials involved in the talks said they had revealed policy differences between the parties regarding the best way to deal with the Iranian nuclear program, alongside a mutual sense of lack of trust, lack of coordination and insufficient transparency.

During the second round of talks between the parties last week, Ben-Shabbat stressed that Israel is concerned that the US administration is advancing in talks with Iran in Vienna - but is not paying enough attention to Israel's concerns.

Israeli officials noted that the United States had complained that Israel was not paying enough attention to the Biden administration's request for a "zero surprise" mutual policy on the Iranian issue, and was conducting military and intelligence operations against Tehran without sufficient transparency with the United States.

In talks with the Americans, Israel emphasized that it has the right and duty to defend itself against Iran.

Despite the Americans' remarks, senior Israeli officials said that Israel had informed the United States in advance about a series of operations with Iran.

"They were not supposed to be surprised," said a senior Israeli official.

The Israelis claim that the Biden administration is the one that maintains insufficient transparency with them regarding the details of the proposals it raises with the Iranians in the nuclear talks.

Senior Israeli officials cite as an example the sanctions that the United States is considering removing from Iran, some of which are not directly related to the nuclear program.

A senior official in the Biden administration rejected the Israeli criticism and told Walla!

Because senior American and Israeli officials are in regular, non-stop and open talks on the Iranian issue in several forums.

"The United States and Israel will continue this close and sincere dialogue in the future," said a senior Biden administration official.

The Prime Minister's Office declined to comment on the content of the talks with the US administration.
