Ramadan in times of the corona pandemic: that will change in 2021
As the
corona pandemic
continues to spread, there is also uncertainty about how
Ramadan 2021
can be held. In Germany, church services are allowed again, but not to the same extent as they were before. Last year - at the beginning of the crisis - the Central Council of Muslims appealed to the communities to adhere to the restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic during the fasting month of Ramadan.
"As difficult as it is for us to keep our mosques closed in the holy month of Ramadan, it is our religious and civic responsibility to do just that in the current phase," the association chairman Aiman Mazyek had told the newspapers of the Funke media group.
Protecting health and human life in this pandemic was a top priority for devout Muslims, Mazyek said.
Ramadan 2021: Why is the festival of the breaking of the fast also called “Sugar Festival”?
The three-day break of the fast is all about the family.
During these days there are visits to relatives.
Children also look forward to the Id, like children in this country at Christmas, because there are gifts and - as I said - lots of things to snack on.
And because there are lots of sweets, the three-day festival is also called the “
Sugar
Festival
” (Şeker Bayramı)
in Turkish tradition
.
This name for the festival has also spread widely in Germany via Turkish.
On this day, Muslims congratulate themselves with “Alles Gute zum Id”, send text messages or postcards.
Besides being

The beginning and end of Ramadan 2021 will be determined in Germany
The question of the exact beginning of the Muslim fasting month Ramadan causes confusion even among believers time and again.
Sometimes the month of Ramadan is 29, sometimes 30 days.
In addition, its beginning shifts every year.
In Islam, the calculation of time is based on the lunar calendar, not the sun.
The ninth lunar month in the Islamic lunar year is called Ramadan.
The
Lenten season begins in the month of Ramadan.
The beginning of a lunar month
is the
new moon
.
If the first crescent of the new moon can be seen in the sky, Ramadan also traditionally begins.
The date is therefore often referred to as the "birth of the new moon".
But
because of the lunar cycle, the month of fasting shifts 10 or 11 days a year
and gradually passes through all the seasons.
In addition, the beginning and end of Ramadan can vary by one day in the various Arab countries.
Due to the geographical location, deviations of one or even two days are possible.
It also makes a difference whether the new moon is sighted by traditional sky observation or determined by astronomical calculations.

In Germany, the beginning and end of the month of fasting have been based on exact astronomical calculations since 2008, according to the Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD).
The first day of
Ramadan in
this country is
April 13, 2021.
After one month, the month of fasting traditionally ends with Ramadan.
The festival (Arabic: Id Al-Fitr; Turkish Ramazan Bayrami) lasts three days and is one of the most important holidays.
For German Muslims, May 12, 2021 is the last day of fasting in Ramadan.
Then the three-day Ramadan festival begins, as the Coordination Council of Muslims in Germany (KRM) has officially announced.

Fasting - a sign of repentance and reflection
The practice of fasting is thousands of years old.
For Christians, Lent is a preparation for Easter, the feast of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Vigil.
In the Bible, fasting is a sign of repentance, sadness, and inner purification.
The Council of Nicaea in 325 prescribed a preceding 40-day fast before Easter - the time Jesus spent in the desert.
Actually, more than 40 days pass from Ash Wednesday to Easter - but Sundays are not counted.
Importance of fasting in Ramadan
The fasting month of Ramadan is considered a particularly holy time in Islam.
Fasting is a sign of the believer's bond with his Creator.
"Siyam", the Arabic term for fasting, means something like "abstinence" and "taming".
During the 30 days body and soul should be cleansed.
In addition, the community is particularly important in Ramadan.
Aiman Mazyek, spokesman for the Coordination Council of Muslims in Germany, recalls the meaning and content of fasting in his greeting for Ramadan 2017 and emphasizes that “this time should be used especially for solidarity with the weak and poor in the world and for worship in the holy month ”.
Ramadan 2021: fasting from sunrise to sunset
The
fasting
begins at
dawn, from the early light
, before the so-called
Fajr prayer
and ends with the
sunset
, the beginning of
Maghrib prayer
.
Traditionally, the daily fast in Ramadan is
broken
after the evening prayer with the
iftar,
a festive dinner.
What is Iftar?
When family and friends gather at sunset to break the fast together, it is called iftar.
Dates with water or milk are served as the first dish with the “Iftar”.
Many eat with the whole family, but mosques also invite you to Iftar.
Chancellor Angela Merkel had already attended an Iftar reception in Berlin.

Ramadan prayer in the BR
In 2015, Bayerische Rundfunk broadcast the prayer live from the mosque in Penzberg at the end of the Islamic month of fasting Ramadan.
The ceremony with Imam Benjamin Idriz was mostly carried out in German in the Islamic community in Penzberg.
In order to strengthen the intercultural exchange, the Bavarian television faded in a crescent moon on a program for Ramadan - and thus attracted protests.
The Ramadan logo was then removed from the program.
It remains to be seen whether Bayerischer Rundfunk will plan its own program focus on Ramadan in 2021.
Do football professionals have to fast in Ramadan?
Fasting in Ramadan is a religious duty for devout Muslims; it is one of the five pillars of Islam.
According to a press release from the German Football Association (DFB), Muslim professional players have to decide for themselves whether they will fast during this time.
The Central Council of Muslims in Germany and the German Football Association (DFB) already gave thought to the topic of football and fasting at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Breaking the fast for professional athletes is allowed, according to a DFB announcement.
National player Mesut Özil therefore makes it impossible to fast during intensive training sessions and games when the weather is warm in summer.
The Gladbach football professional and devout Muslim Ibrahima Traoré, for example, waived his vacation because of the fasting month of 2017. “When we at Borussia have the summer break and the other colleagues are on vacation, I will fly to my hometown Paris and have my personal Ramadan. For that I don't go on vacation, ”said the 29-year-old Borussia Mönchengladbach attacking player.
Because of the upcoming qualifying matches for the Africa Cup with his home country Guinea, Traoré postponed the start of Ramadan in 2017.
According to Traoré, it is more difficult for Muslims in Germany than they did a few years ago.
"But you shouldn't always complain," said the professional, who has been playing for Gladbach since 2014.
"It is for all Muslims to show that everything that is terrible in the world in the name of Islam is not us."
This year, the
European Championship, which has been
postponed by one year due to the corona pandemic, is coming up
.
The
Summer Olympics
in Tokyo are also planned for this year.
Islamic Holidays - Ramadan 2021
Ramadan 2021 begins on the evening of April 13, 2021.
The Id al-Fitr fasting festival: May 13-15, 2021.
The Festival of Sacrifice: July 20 to July 22, 2021.
The festival of sacrifice
Eid al-Adha
, together with the breaking of the fast
Id al-Fitr
after Ramadan, is considered the most important Islamic celebration.
With the festival, believers remember Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to sacrifice a son in order to prove his faith to God.
In Germany, the Festival of Sacrifice 2021 begins on July 20 and lasts until July 22, 2021.
The prayer on Friday
Devout Muslims pray five times a day - at work, at home or in the mosque.
In Islamic countries, the muezzin (prayer caller) reminds of the times for prayer.
The prayer on Friday is particularly important.
This day is the highlight of the week like Sunday for Christians.
The five pillars of Islam
Fasting in Ramadan (Saum) is one of the five basic duties for everyone, the so-called pillars of Islam (“devotion to God”), which are anchored in the Koran.
These five pillars are:
Making the profession of faith (Shahada).
Performing the five daily prayers (Salat).
Fasting (Siaym) during the entire fasting month of Ramadan.
Paying the alms tax (zakat).
The pilgrimage (Hajj) to the Kaaba in Mecca once in a lifetime, if one is able to do so.
Ramadan: Promotional video calls for peace to Muslims
At the beginning of the Islamic month of fasting in 2017, a promotional video spread across the Internet calling for Muslims to love instead of hate and violence against people of different faiths. “Worship your God through love, not through terror,” is the central message of the three-minute commercial from the Kuwaiti telecommunications provider Sain, which is also represented in other countries in the region. You can see a man preparing a bomb as well as pictures of bomb attacks in the region, which the jihadist militia Islamic State (IS) or the Al-Qaeda terror network claimed to be. “I will tell God everything,” comments a child's voice. "That you filled the cemeteries with our children and swept our school desks empty."
However, the video has a happy ending: it shows pictures of a wedding party with laughing children dressed in white.
“We will counter their hatred with love songs,” reads on a black background.
The video, in which the Arab pop star Hussain al-Dschassmi also participated, has already been viewed almost two million times and shared more than 4000 times on the online Facebook network.
The Gulf monarchies participate in the US-led coalition's fight against IS in Syria and Iraq.
