Thanks to Corona? Air in Nuremberg in 2020 is significantly better than in 2019

The air in Nuremberg is significantly better in 2020 than it was in 2019. The annual limit values are even below the permitted limit.

The air in Nuremberg is significantly better in 2020 than it was in 2019. The annual limit values are even below the permitted limit.

Nuremberg - The Department for Environment and Health takes stock of air quality in the past year 2020 for Nuremberg *.

"It is very good news that the limit values for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine dust (fractions PM10 and PM2.5) were safely adhered to at all air measuring stations in the city in 2020," says the Department for Environment and Health.

The speaker Britta Walthelm continues: "This applies to both the annual limit values and short-term limit values on a daily or hourly basis."

Annual limit value for nitrogen dioxide clearly undercut in Nuremberg

The measuring station on Von-der-Tann-Strasse, which was conspicuous in the past when the annual limit value for nitrogen dioxide was exceeded, is now well below the annual limit value of 40 micrograms with 36 micrograms of NO2 per cubic meter of air.

Since the nitrogen dioxide pollution in the urban environment is mainly caused by motorized individual traffic, the continuous change of fleet with improved exhaust gas cleaning and an increasing proportion of alternative forms of propulsion is having a positive effect here.

For 2020, special effects include the reduction in shopping and visitor traffic (e.g. to the Christkindlesmarkt) during the lockdown phase and the generally lower vehicle movements by commuters due to increased home office activity.

2020 ozone values in the city of Nuremberg were inconspicuous

In 2019, which is considered to be the year of the ozone records, 2020 turns out to be a largely inconspicuous year also with regard to the ozone values.

Accordingly, the information threshold of the 39th BImSchV (ordinance for the implementation of the Federal Immission Control Act - ordinance on air quality standards and maximum emissions) of 180 µg / m³ (micrograms per cubic meter) for the protection of sensitive population groups was not exceeded, as a message from the town hall shows.

Reasons for cleaner air in Nuremberg: Corona and good weather ensure better values

It is also stated that “not a single ozone warning had to be triggered”.

Only at the measuring station at the airport was the target value for the number of days with increased ozone levels exceeded again in the 2020 calendar year.

In addition to the corona-related restrictions in public life, the summer weather without pronounced phases with high temperatures, drought and intense solar radiation was responsible for the positive ozone development.

The ozone values are measured at a total of five air measuring stations.

The basis of the assessment by the city drainage and environmental analysis of Nuremberg is based on values from the city area.

The locations of the stations are:

  • Von-der-Tann-Straße (close to traffic),

  • Köhnstraße (close to traffic, south of the main train station),

  • Muggenhofer Strasse (urban background),

  • Jakobsplatz (urban background)

  • and the airport (rural-urban background).
