The ultra-Orthodox parties do not rule out the possibility that some of their members will abstain from voting on the formation of a parity government headed by right-wing chairman Naftali Bennett and chairman Yesh Atid Yair Lapid, if established.

This, in exchange for a commitment to maintain the status quo on issues of religion and state and budgets for meetings.

The chairman of Torah Judaism, Moshe Gafni, today (Wednesday) refused in an interview with Kol Barama to pledge that they would vote against such a government, and said in response to a question on the subject: "We will ask the Torah scholars."

Gafni claimed that the chances of forming a government headed by Bennett Similar chances of forming a government led by Likud chairman Benjamin Netanyahu, ie very low, and made it clear that Torah Jewry "always went with the right and the Likud" and if a government is formed "on the other side", as he puts it, his party will sit in opposition.

Gafni met with Bennett this week, and is expected to meet with Lapid this coming Monday.

He explained that he was "talking to everyone" and that there was no connection between the meetings and his support for an alternative government.

Political sources in the ultra-Orthodox parties have estimated that there is a possibility that some members of the ultra-Orthodox factions will abstain from voting if a government headed by Bennett-Lapid is formed.

According to them, "it will mainly be to minimize damage from the opposition. We will never sit in such a government."

This assessment is heard mainly among the Degel HaTorah and Shas factions, although their leaders, Gafni and Aryeh Deri, have made it clear that they will sit in the opposition. Opposite this position, the Agudat Israel faction headed by Minister Yaakov Litzman rejects the possibility outright. To enable its establishment, it is possible that a bloc of Netanyahu's opponents will be able to form the government without the support of some of the Arab factions, as is now required of them.
