The Jableh Antiquities Department started the work of converting the old Jableh prison building “Al Saraya” into a museum at the beginning of this month to introduce the most important archaeological discoveries in the area.

Dr. Masoud Badawi, Head of the Jableh Antiquities Department, said in a statement to SANA, “The Department of Antiquities started the first phase of restoring the ground floor of the old“ Saraya ”building under the supervision of engineers from the Department. Upon completion, according to Bedouin, the museum will display the artifacts discovered as a result of the archaeological excavations that were carried out in various locations in the Jableh area of ​​Tal Tueni, Tell Sokas, Tel Ciano, Tel Iris, the cemeteries of Al Jubaybat, Azza, Al Fayd, Bani Qahtan Castle, Al Minaqah Castle, Nepal Summit, Jableh Archaeological Theater and the Roman Bath, in addition to To separate sites where the archaeological excavations took place.

Badawi pointed out that the museum will serve as a civilizational and cultural center, which introduces visitors to the ancient history of the Jableh region, which extends from the sixth millennium BC to the nineteenth century AD.

It is noteworthy that the old Saraya building in the city of Jableh is considered one of the most important historical and archaeological buildings in it, and it is located in the middle of the northeastern side of the old city, about 100 meters south of the Roman archaeological Jableh Theater and dates back to the Mamluk period and the time of the Ottoman occupation.

Since the 1960s, the building was occupied by many governmental institutions, before the ancient city of Jableh was registered in the Register of Heritage and Historic Cities in the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in 1998, as the Saraya building was part of the architectural fabric of the city.
