The democratic member of Yuen Long District, Du Jialun, announced earlier that he would not swear an oath and has resigned.
The Government today (23) gazetted that an elected member of the Fairview Garden constituency of the Yuen Long District Council was vacant, alleging that due to the resignation of the elected member of the district Council Du Jialun, in accordance with section 26(b) of the District Councils Ordinance (Chapter 547) , Its seats will be vacant on May 1 this year.
Du Jialun announced his decision to resign earlier this month. At that time, he accused the government of vigorously suppressing the democrats. In addition, the government's requirements for district councilors to take oaths were harsh and vague. He questioned the government's freedom to interpret the oath and accused the democrats of violating the oath. After weighing the severity, he decided to resign.
In addition to Du Jialun, the pro-democracy district councillors who recently resigned after refusing to take the oath include Sai Kung District Councillor Lai Ming Chak and North District Councillor Yuen Ho-lun.
In addition, Tsuen Wan District Councillor Tan Kaibang, Kwun Tong District Councillor Li Ka-ta, Sai Kung District Councillor Fan Kwok-wai and North District District Councillor Lin Cheuk Ting resigned from their posts due to the remand of the Democratic Party primary election.
