A 28-year-old boy was killed and four other people were shot when a man opened fire in the heart of downtown San Diego, California, on Thursday night, according to a city police spokeswoman.
The event occurred between 500 J St. and Fifth Avenue, around 10:30 pm local time.

suspect was taken into custody
, authorities added.
An agent used a taser pistol to block it.
The man, still unidentified, had a confrontation in front of a hotel with the young man he later killed, according to investigators.
He left him on the sidewalk, where he was treated without success.
Afterward, he made his way down Fifth Avenue and had another verbal confrontation with a group of other people.
There he
left four wounded
, three of them were taken to a hospital and the other was treated at the scene.
None are in danger of life, according to the authorities' account.

Police said the man allegedly caused several fights with other people.
He also claimed that there are "many witnesses" and "multiple crime scenes" spread out over several blocks.
San Diego resident Sam Hall, 29, said:
"I heard some shots, I walked to my window that faces the intersection of 5th and K and saw 10-20 people running south on 5th. Then I heard a few more shots and then several police cars and a helicopter over me. [...] ".
“I didn't see the attacker, but
everyone looked scared.
I saw a couple crouching behind a car while trying to find out what was going on and then they ran off, "he said.
The police avoided talking about a "mass shooting."
The investigation into these events is expected to continue.
