Leni Kühn regularly appears in television and radio reports.

But now the Aidlinger, an enthusiastic horticulturist and proven specialist in this field, is getting a really large TV platform: Kühn is at the center of the first episode of the new BR program “Bavaria's Garden Kitchen”.

  • Aidlinger Leni Kühn has a big appearance on Bavarian television on Monday, April 26th.

  • For 45 minutes she will garden and cook in front of a huge audience.

  • Kühn wants people to deal with vegetables and other foods.

Aidling

- Basically, she doesn't like competitions. "Why is it not possible without it?" Asks Leni Kühn. “You always have to measure yourself - in childhood, in school. Apparently that is part of it. ”This also applies to“ Bavaria's garden kitchen ”, the new broadcast on BR television. In the first episode on Monday, April 26th, Kühn has a big appearance at prime time. For 45 minutes she will garden and cook in front of a huge audience - for four other men and women who are no strangers to growing fruit and vegetables on their own land. And then there is this competition. For a planting task, ten paprika seedlings should grow into stately, well-bearing plants. Garden expert Sebastian Ehrl awards the points and also evaluates a building project; Kühn creates a "root window" in which the roots of yellow beets and beetroot become visible. For a two-course menu at the end of each episode - Kühn serves up “vegetable rarities with pickled cornel cherries with homemade cream cheese”, followed by “Krautkrapfen made from your own cabbage with colorful garden salad” - the participants award points themselves. And of course: at the end of the last broadcast (May 24th) a winner will be chosen. Kühn, who takes care of a large vegetable field in Aidling next to the garden around the family's organic dairy farm, knows: "It's very classic that films are always about competition."May) a winner will be chosen. Kühn is self-sufficient

For the chairwoman of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district association for horticulture and land maintenance, this factor, the question of victory and defeat, does not count as a bean. Kühn is self-sufficient. What she grows and harvests represents the nourishment basis for her and her family. Kühn focuses on bringing her mission, her philosophy, which is of immense importance in her life, to the people: she wants them to People deal with vegetables and other foods - simply what they eat. Others should learn to “deal with valuable soil and creation”. Kühn is convinced that “it doesn't matter whether something grows in my soil or in some nutrient solution or in giant greenhouses in Spain”. She wants to showhow it produces its food and thus makes itself independent of others. The "Garden Challenge", as the BR also calls its new program about sowing, planting, caring for, harvesting and processing, offers one possibility for this. A representative of the state association of horticultural associations had drawn the 54-year-old's attention to the format: “Wouldn't that be for you?” Kühn thought that she would be accompanied through the gardening year, so went into preliminary talks. "What comes out at the end, I didn't even have on my screen at first."“Wouldn't that be for you?” Kühn thought that she would be accompanied through the gardening year and went into preliminary talks. A huge effort

Leni Kühn does not yet know the result - and accordingly does not know what will be broadcast at the end, what message is inherent in the first episode, how it and its philosophy come across.

In any case, the effort for the broadcast was "gigantic", says Kühn.

“That was a challenge, but it was fun.” The film team worked in Aidling for six full days - two each in spring, summer and autumn 2020;

Kühn was always on the road for two days to visit the four other Bavarian television gardeners.

Almost meditative

That also sounds like stress and therefore basically does not fit in with her great passion.

Because Kühn approaches this almost meditatively.

She perceives gardening as restful and relaxing - and so important for the psyche.

“It just feels good.” The excitement after filming has now subsided.

Boldly will look at the result on Monday, no question about it.

In the afternoon before the broadcast, she also made a live appearance on the program “Wir in Bayern” (4.15 p.m.), in which Kühn pointed out the new evening format.

It will be “exciting”, says the horticulturist.

She will cope with all of this.

In addition to her gardening, Kühn now also has a lot of television experience.

The broadcast

“Bayerns Gartenküche” runs from April 26th to May 24th every Monday at 8:15 pm on the third.

According to the BR, five hobby gardeners compete against each other "in a friendly competition" and show how they grow and process their fruit and vegetables.

They also reveal tips and tricks about gardening and cooking.

The first four episodes of the show will be available from April 23 in the BR media library.
