After vaccination with AstraZeneca, 59 cases of cerebral vein thrombosis have already been reported in Germany.

The data from the Paul Ehrlich Institute provide new insights.

59 cases of sinus and cerebral vein thrombosis (SVT) have already been reported in Germany after a corona vaccination with the active ingredient from the British manufacturer AstraZeneca, as reported by the Paul Ehrlich Institute.

The Paul Ehrlich Institute has now published further data on the cases, which bring new findings.

Women in particular are affected by sinus and cerebral vein thromboses: 45 of the 59 reports concerned women between the ages of 20 and 79 years, and 14 reports concerned men between the ages of 20 and 70 years.

Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI)

The Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) in Langen is the German federal institute for vaccines and biomedical drugs.

The institute is a higher federal authority within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Health.

The responsibility of the PEI includes the approval and state batch release of medical technology devices, vaccines and biomedical drugs.

Since August 2004, one of the tasks of the Paul Ehrlich Institute has also been the approval of clinical studies for the drugs he is responsible for.

Fifty-nine cases of cerebral vein thrombosis occurred after primary vaccination with AstraZeneca

The patients who developed sinus and cerebral vein thrombosis as side effects of the British vaccine were vaccinated between February 13, 2021 and March 31, 2021.

In 57 cases, symptoms began within 29 days of being vaccinated with Vaxzevria, the new name of AstraZeneca's vaccine *.

In two cases there is no information on the time interval between the time of vaccination and the occurrence of the thrombosis.

The longest reported time interval between vaccination and onset of symptoms was 17 days in the 59 reported cases in Germany.

The very rare cases of cerebral vein thrombosis were only reported to the Paul Ehrlich Institute after the first vaccination - so they occurred before the second vaccination dose.

Cerebral vein thrombosis after AstraZeneca vaccination: 59 cases known to date

In twelve of the cases of sinus and cerebral vein thrombosis, the patients died - according to the institute, there were six women and six men. In 31 of the SVT cases with a known time interval, thrombocytopenia was also reported. Thrombocytopenia means that the number of platelets is too low. Platelets are blood platelets that are important for blood clotting. If the number of platelets falls below a certain level, bleeding increases. This can range from minimal skin bleeding to nosebleeds to dangerous organ bleeding.

In Germany, 17,932,380 people have already received their first vaccination dose (as of April 22).

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), a total of more than 4.2 million first doses of AstraZeneca were administered up to and including April 15.

The risk of developing a cerebral vein thrombosis after an AstraZeneca vaccination is therefore less than 0.0014 percent.

Cerebral vein thrombosis after AstraZeneca vaccination: cause known

The possible cause of cerebral vein thrombosis is now known: As the

NDR

reports, the AstraZeneca vaccine triggers a defense mechanism in some people.

When examining samples from affected patients, the experts from the University Medical Center Greifswald found that the corona vaccine activates the blood platelets, i.e. thrombocytes.

Some people have platelets activated after vaccination with AstraZeneca, causing blood clots to form in the brain. The researchers were even able to identify this mechanism so clearly that they were also able to develop a targeted treatment option. For affected people, there is now a targeted active ingredient that can be administered when a thrombosis occurs.

Anyone who experiences symptoms of sinus and cerebral vein thrombosis should see a doctor immediately.

Symptoms for this are: severe persistent headache, increasing malaise with nausea and vomiting, punctiform skin hemorrhages, epileptic fits or seizures, neurological deficits such as speech disorders, paralysis, visual disturbances and general sensory disorders.
