Update from April 20, 8:07 p.m.:

CDU boss Armin Laschet has now received support from the Union faction a week after a dramatic meeting.

Both parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus (CDU) and CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt had congratulated Laschet on the nomination, it was said on Tuesday from participants in the digital meeting.

Both therefore called for unity in the federal election campaign.

After this information, Laschet thanked the group for support and an honest opinion.

He was quoted as saying: "If we say 'let's discuss openly', then that includes criticism." The group is an "extremely important place".

You must be involved in the work on the election manifesto.

In addition, good government action is "extremely important for winning the election".

Chancellor Angela Merkel said after information from participants with a view to Laschet and the upcoming tasks: "This is the future." The current government is the present, now the election campaign is about the future.

Merkel also campaigned for unity after this information.

CSU boss Markus Söder has already commented on this.

In the debate, the Baden-Württemberg MP Gunther Krichbaum demanded that Söder's supporters should also stand behind Laschet.

It now depends on unity.

In the power struggle between Laschet and Söder over the K question, Krichbaum had organized a list of MPs with which a vote in the parliamentary group should be demanded if the rivals could not have reached an agreement.

This was considered a means by Söder supporters among the CDU MPs, with which they wanted to enforce their preferred candidate.

K question decided: Lashes made of "Chancellor's Wood"?

- Union wants to draw conclusions from days of chaos

Update from April 20, 4:25 p.m.:

CDU Federal

Vice

-President Thomas Strobl has also backed the decision for Armin Laschet as the Union's candidate for chancellor. "One of the great strengths of Armin Laschet is: He can integrate, bring together," said Strobl on Tuesday. “I have to respect his perseverance over the past few days. It is carved out of Chancellor's wood. ”He voted for Armin Laschet, said Strobl -“ and I trust Armin Laschet to build bridges now within the CDU and also between the two Union parties. ”The two sisters CDU and CSU now have to get involved to gather good togetherness behind the candidate for chancellor.

Like Annalena Baerbock the day before, Laschet also gets a chancellor candidate TV appearance: In the program “Was now, Herr Laschet?” He will answer questions from ZDF editor-in-chief Peter Frey and his deputy Bettina Schausten. The interview will be broadcast at 7:20 p.m.

Update from April 20, 3:13 p.m.:

The Union wants to draw conclusions from the tough weeks of the Chancellor's

struggle:

Union

faction leader

Ralph Brinkhaus (CDU) has asked the CDU and CSU to find an orderly procedure for a candidate for Chancellor.

If such a decision is pending again, it should be defined "in advance" how the process will run, said Brinkhaus on Tuesday before a parliamentary group meeting.

"We would do well to learn from the last few weeks," he said, referring to the wrestling of Laschet and Söder.

In the morning, the Greens had attested that the parties had a "problem with foresighted action" (see update from 12.25 p.m.).

Laschet is candidate for chancellor: CDU chief wants to seek “direct dialogue”

Update from April 20, 2:35 p.m.:

Armin Laschet's press conference is over. The North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister is now officially the Union's candidate for Chancellor. Laschet used his appearance to underline the legitimacy of the CDU board's vote and to hold a first campaign speech. His first words, however, were addressed to the CSU - he continues to rely on good cooperation and thanks for the support, emphasized the newly crowned candidate for chancellor.

Update from April 20, 2:30 p.m .:

Laschet announced

that

he would seek a “direct dialogue” with those who had a different opinion on the Chancellor's question.

A coexistence of different "types" and opinions is an asset, explains the Union Chancellor candidate.

The fact that Friedrich Merz supported him shows that competition can result in cooperation, says Laschet in response to another journalist's question - he is confident that this will now also succeed between the CDU and the CSU.

Laschet is candidate for chancellor: self-criticism after board meeting - "we unintentionally ..."

Update from April 20, 2:25 p.m.:

Armin Laschet evades a question about the events of the nightly meeting with Markus Söder on Sunday.

"Through our meeting yesterday we unintentionally contributed to a lot of transparency," insofar as there is no need to catch up in this regard.

Laschet also exercises self-criticism: In the long run, there must also be meetings and committees in which one can speak confidentially.

Laschet does not want to answer the questions of whether there was a CDU concession for Söder's withdrawal and the damage caused by the debate: “No” is his brief reply.

Update from April 20, 2:20 p.m.:

Laschet is now

switching

to the mode of an election speech - just like a week ago. “As a country, we now have to become better, faster and more modern,” he says. The aim is "more innovation, more trust, less bureaucracy". A promotion promise must also remain valid. In addition, Laschet once again emphasizes the importance of Europe and “multilateral solutions”: Europe's contribution must become more offensive in a world “including authoritarian social models” and contribute to a “better world”. Germany is leading by a role model function, he explains. He imagines a “Germany of diversity, diversity” based on the values of the Basic Law.

Update from April 20, 2:17 p.m .:

He will continue to

coordinate

with Markus Söder “whenever it is necessary” - “daily, two days, weekly”, emphasizes Laschet.

He never entered the CDU with the idea of becoming a candidate for chancellor, says Laschet.

It is important to him that politics means "listening".

Probably a renewed reference to the importance of the “open” debate of the previous evening.

Chancellor candidate Laschet: CDU confirms freestyle, Laschet praises Söder and “transparency” - and wants to underpin the legitimacy of the vote

Update from April 20, 2:12 p.m.:

The first words of the Chancellor candidate apply to the competitor Söder: "We are grateful to the CSU for a good, fair dealings with a very important decision," says Laschet. The CSU made the decision of the CDU possible - "that is a great vote of confidence," added the CDU boss.

Discussions were more open than ever before, says Laschet, referring to yesterday's debate on the board.

He would like this transparency to continue to shape the CDU in the future.

“All positions were heard and exchanged.

The federal executive board is the body in which everyone is represented, ”Laschet underlines the legitimacy of the vote.

The parliamentary group and the opinion of the MEPs in the European Parliament are also important.

“And I also know that some would have preferred a different decision,” he admits.

But yesterday Söder "underlined the importance of representative democracy".

Update from April 20, 2.10 p.m .:

"That is why Armin Laschet is the candidate for chancellor of a strong union," Ziemiak has already announced, in principle, the decisive news.

Update from April 20, 2:07 p.m.:

Armin Laschet's press conference begins a few minutes late.

"The most important topic at the moment is the fight against the pandemic," explains CDU General Secretary Paul Ziemiak at the opening, however - before turning to the question of the Chancellor.

"Our thanks as the CDU go to Markus Söder for fairness and support," he says.

The CDU board had "made a clear decision" after more than 60 requests to speak at the board meeting.

Laschet "ensured openness and transparency": "Everything was on the table."

Update from April 20, 1:55 p.m.:

In the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus the journalists are waiting for CDU boss Armin Laschet.

He will shortly make a statement - and will probably officially declare himself the Union’s candidate for chancellor.

Laschet candidate for chancellor: Merkel congratulates after wrestling with Söder - CDU leadership relieved

Update from April 20, 1:25 p.m.:

Armin Laschet will now also comment on the clarified chancellor question - even before the Union parliamentary group meeting, which threatened to become the scene of another showdown.

At 2 p.m., the CDU boss and general secretary Paul Ziemiak want to appear in front of the press.

The CDU leadership has meanwhile reacted with relief to the CSU's approval of Laschet's candidacy for chancellor.

"We in the CDU are grateful to the CSU for a good and friendly deal," said the party leadership to AFP on Tuesday.

“It was always clear: only together are we strong.

Nothing changed about that."

Update from April 20, 12.55 p.m.:

Congratulations for the winner, criticism of the loser: After Armin Laschet's freestyle to candidate for Union Chancellor, the roles are clearly assigned. Chancellor Angela Merkel congratulated the CDU leader on being a candidate for her inheritance: “Congratulations, dear Armin Laschet, on your new position as candidate for chancellor of the Union. I'm looking forward to the coming months of our collaboration, ”she said, according to a tweet from government spokesman Steffen Seibert.

Markus Söder, on the other hand, has to deal with the criticism of the opposition in the Bavarian state parliament.

“Söder was on an unprecedented ego trip that will not only damage the CDU and CSU in the long term.

Now he is called to do his homework in Bavaria, ”stressed SPD parliamentary group leader Horst Arnold.

The citizens have the right to “the full commitment of the Prime Minister”.

Söder must now, among other things, settle the coalition dispute with the free voters over the federal emergency brake.

Laschet instead of Söder: Chancellor question resolved - Greens attest Union "problem with foresighted action"

Update from April 20, 12.25 p.m.:

The competition has already reacted: Green parliamentary group leader Anton Hofreiter congratulates Armin Laschet on his candidacy for chancellor. He now hopes for a substantive and fair election campaign, says the Greens - and goes straight on the offensive: The Union has "a problem with foresighted action," complains Hofreiter: The Chancellor conflict had been foreseeable for months, the sister parties had a procedure but not developed. The problem is not limited to the chancellor question - poor preparation can also be seen in the pandemic and climate protection.

The left is also teasing.

"I don't even want to know what the CDU did behind closed doors to force Markus Söder to withdraw, but a sovereign candidate selection looks different," said party leader Susanne Hennig-Wellsow of the dpa.

Laschet was "the maximum cramp candidate of a crisis-ridden and corruption-ridden union," she added.

"What the SPD and the Greens want to do with him remains their secret."

Update from April 20, 12.11 p.m.:

This means that Markus Söder's appearance is over again.

The CSU boss has unequivocally confirmed Armin Laschet as the Union's candidate for chancellor.

In a remarkable statement, Söder and his general secretary Markus Blume also praised a “damn good offer”.

Blume even called his party leader "candidate of hearts".

The criticism of the last-minute maneuver towards the candidacy for chancellor, which had been rampant for days, was also preventively rejected by Söder: "Decency and style" were the basic principle.

One last swipe towards Armin Laschet could also be read from the statements.

In the end, it was not the approval for Söder that was decisive, but “the majority”, explained Blume - what was meant was: the majority on the CDU board, which the CSU boss himself had indirectly referred to as the “back room” a week ago.

Söder proclaims Laschet as "candidate for chancellor of the Union" - CSU general praises "candidate of hearts"

Markus Söder clears the way: The CSU boss on Tuesday made his statement on the question of the Union's chancellor.

© Peter Kneffel / dpa

Update from April 20, 12:06 p.m.:

He has already congratulated Laschet, explains Söder.

The CSU boss tries to dismiss any criticism of the Union's self-tearing in the Chancellor debate: “Decency and style” are “basic principles of community,” he says.

It was an offer, emphasizes CSU General Secretary Markus Blume - "a damn good offer," he explains.

Söder said he was "clear on course and confident in style".

He is a "candidate of the heart", but in the end "something else" decides in a democracy: "The majority."

Update from April 20, 12:03 p.m.:

Markus Söder does not want to leave any doubts in his statement.

"The dice have been cast, Armin Laschet is the Union's candidate for chancellor," he opens his statement.

The word he gave applies, says Söder.

The CSU received "an unbelievable amount of encouragement" for its "offer" to run for chancellor.

That is also why the step was important.

Now it is important to take responsibility for the Union: "We do not want a split."

Update from April 20, 11:57 a.m.:

In a few minutes the chancellor dispute of the Union could finally be settled: Markus Söder will comment on the vote of the CDU board, and the CSU's approval of the candidate Armin Laschet is expected.

Everything is set up for Söder's press conference in Munich.

Laschet as a "decision against the grassroots"?

CDU country chiefs grumble - but do not want to cross

Update from April 20, 11.42 a.m.:

More and more opinions from the CDU top on the solution of the Söder-Laschet question reach the public - and they underline the presumably extremely delicate mood in the party.

The Thuringian CDU boss Christian Hirte, for example, has now reprimanded a “decision against the CDU base”.

In an interview with the dpa, however, he warned at the same time: "We are now well advised to gather behind Armin Laschet and concentrate on the content."

Saxony-Anhalt's CDU chairman Sven Schulze was apparently looking for additional draft horses next to Laschet when he presented a poster campaign for the upcoming state election *. “The wish of the base in Saxony-Anhalt is that Armin Laschet, as a candidate for chancellor, now perhaps more closely involve Friedrich Merz,” explained Schulze. The CDU regional chief had previously emphasized several times that there was a preference for the Bavarian Prime Minister within the CDU of Saxony-Anhalt and also in East Germany in the race for the Union's candidacy for chancellor. "We will now campaign together, we have a very clear result for Armin Laschet," said Schulze.

Update from April 20, 11.20 a.m.:

The CSU sees the circumstances of the CDU board vote for Armin Laschet as critical.

It is a process that "leaves quite a few question marks," said the chairman of the CSU regional group in the Bundestag, Alexander Dobrindt, on Tuesday.

But it brought a result.

"And you have to deal with the result."

The CSU politician initially did not want to make a further assessment with a view to the statement by CSU chairman Markus Söder that was announced for 12 noon.

Numerous votes for CDU chancellor candidate Armin Laschet - Claudia Roth is concerned

Update from April 20, 11.00 a.m.:

That Markus Söder will probably accept the CDU board vote for Armin Laschet, the German press agency has now learned from party circles.

The

Bild

newspaper reported on it first.

At noon, Söder wants to comment publicly: The CSU has invited to a press statement at the party headquarters in Munich for 12 noon.

Update from April 20, 10.45 a.m.:

More and more voices see Armin Laschet as candidate for chancellor of the Union as set.

  • CDU member representative Henning Otte told the RBB Inforadio that it was "very clear" a decision in favor of Laschet.

It was the agreement that "if the CDU speaks out clearly for him, then that is also the decision to run for chancellor".

It is about "not just doing politics in Bavaria, but for the whole of Germany." Armin Laschet stands for that.

  • Friedrich Merz, former competitor of Laschet for the CDU party chairmanship, congratulated "Bild Live" and emphasized: "Now we are looking ahead: Out of the small and small, concrete proposals for the federal elections, a decade of modernization for Germany."

  • The former CDU general secretary Ruprecht Polenz said in the BR that the vote in the CDU board was "really a clear result, which, I think, will also be accepted by everyone".

  • CDU MP Roderich Kiesewetter said: "Söder clearly asked for a vote and got it".

Meanwhile, concerns about the consequences of the sisterly power struggle come from the Greens.

The two parties had "done unbelievable damage and tore each other to pieces," said Bundestag Vice President Claudia Roth in an interview with Deutschlandfunk.

The "great conflict" is worrying.

The Union will "have to struggle for a long time" with this.

Union's candidate for chancellor: Markus Söder will comment on the CDU's vote at 12 noon

Update from April 20, 10:25 a.m.:

CSU boss Markus Söder will comment on the CDU board vote at 12 noon. Söder will give a statement together with CSU General Secretary Markus Blume at the CSU headquarters in Munich, the CSU announced. Originally, the Christian Socials had announced a statement at 1 p.m. on the sidelines of a meeting of the parliamentary group.

Update from April 20, 10:05 a.m.:

Federal Minister of Economics and Merkel confidante Peter Altmaier (CDU) has now commented on the nightly meeting of the CDU top.

“The CDU federal executive did not make the decision easy for itself.

We discussed for many hours and weighed the arguments.

The decision in favor of Armin Laschet was ultimately made with a large majority.

We should all feel obliged to that! ”He tweeted on Tuesday morning.

Markus Söder apparently wants to accept Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet - the end of the sister fight is approaching

Update from April 20, 10 a.m.:

From party circles, the

picture

wants to have

learned that CSU boss Markus Söder apparently wants to accept the decision of the CDU board of directors.

Söder will make a statement at 1 p.m.

Update from April 20, 9:40 a.m.:

Clear words from CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt: "The procedure was bumpy, but the result was clear," he quotes

focus.de

.

A first sign that the CDU's little sister party could pave the way for Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet.

Söder or Laschet: The decision of the CDU's candidate for chancellor is imminent

Update from April 20, 9:20 a.m.:

Markus Söder has announced a statement after the CDU board vote for Armin Laschet as the Union's candidate for chancellor.

At 1 p.m., the CSU boss wants to speak on the sidelines of a parliamentary group meeting in the state parliament in Munich.

It is eagerly awaited how Söder will react to the nocturnal events.

Update from April 20, 9:00 a.m.:

CDU politicians see Armin Laschet legitimized as the Union's candidate for chancellor. "This is really a clear result, which I think will be accepted by everyone," said the former Secretary General Ruprecht Polenz on Tuesday the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation. "The losing minority must join the majority decision," he added.

CDU budget expert Eckhardt Rehberg told NDR Info that Söder must now keep his word to support the CDU chairman and campaign together without resentment.

"If he didn't do that, it would be the second break in the word," says Rehberg.

"If that goes further between the CDU and CSU, between Laschet and Söder, then it will damage the Union even more than it has before, and then we can stop the election campaign," said Rehberg.

He pointed out that Laschet had only been elected CDU party chairman three months ago.

"It must have been clear to everyone who is chairman, who also has access to the candidacy for chancellor."

Söder vs. Laschet: Chancellor candidate of the Union - hope for an early end to the power struggle

Update from April 20, 8:12 am:

Hope for an end to the Union power struggle, but too early to congratulate: "It would be desirable that the CDU leadership has settled the unspeakable cockfight tonight and that both parties - CDU and CSU - in this difficult time for so many people in the country finally concentrate again on factual politics, "said SPD leader Norbert Walter-Borjans on Tuesday of the German press agency.

However, he expressed his doubts that the CSU leadership would give in. "As someone who has not only seen Markus Söder's behavior over the past few days, but also knows his opinion of Armin Laschet from years of personal experience, I am not very optimistic about the promised loyalty oath of the 'party friend' from Bavaria", said Walter-Borjans. And added: "As a political competitor and North Rhine-Westphalia I can congratulate Armin Laschet on the result of the vote - it is too early to congratulate."

Update from April 20, 8 a.m.:

The deputy chairman of the Union parliamentary group Thorsten Frei expects a decision on Tuesday in the Union's candidacy for chancellor.

"In any case, it is a crystal clear statement, which is why I expect that this question will also be resolved today between the two parties, and that this question will be resolved amicably, as it is agreed," said the CDU politician Frei am Tuesday on Deutschlandfunk.

CDU board votes for Armin Laschet - soon clarity in the power struggle CDU boss vs. Söder?

Update from April 20, 6:15 a.m.:

It was a memorable meeting: after more than six hours of deliberation, the CDU board voted in favor of chairman Armin Laschet with a clear majority. This Tuesday will show whether the Union's power struggle is actually over. The online mood revealed the result 31: 9 for Laschet - and against the competitor for the candidate for chancellor, Markus Söder (CSU).

"We as the CSU and I also respect every decision," Söder said before the special digital session. It remains to be seen how the Union faction in the Bundestag and the Laschet critics on the CDU base will behave. The afternoon session of the CDU and CSU members of the Bundestag should bring clarity. A week ago, the majority of those in favor of Söder's candidacy spoke up.

Update from April 20, 1:00 a.m .:

Armin Laschet sees the dispute for Chancellor candidates apparently over after the marathon meeting of the CDU federal executive committee: With the words “I will now do all I can for this CDU.

Good night! ”, He said goodbye to

the participants of the online round

after information from the

world

.

He does not take anything of what has been said "to heart".

Laschet also announced a phone call with Söder.

However, at a press conference on Monday last week, the CDU boss had apparently already felt himself to be the winner of the wrestling.

Is now the winner in the Chancellor's wrestling with Söder?

CDU board votes - final confirmation from Munich is still pending

Update from April 20, 0.45 a.m.:

After major teething problems and hours of debates, the CDU executive board may still have brought about a decision on the Union chancellor candidate: According to matching media reports, the committee voted in an online vote quite clearly in favor of Armin Laschet - and against Markus Söder - pronounced: 31: 9 for Laschet the result was, according to several sources.

This could end the week-long public wrestling.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether this will really happen: CSU boss Söder announced on Monday that he would now accept a vote by the CDU, but there was initially no confirmation from the CSU in view of the majority ratios that have already become public.

"Digitization and the CDU will no longer be friends," joked FDP MP Christian Jung, "no real participation for me unless the high-performance slotting machine 'OL 1000 plus' is used," scoffed SPD Vice-President Kevin Kühnert.

Even within its own party, the situation caused unnerved reactions.

"You can really make it difficult for yourself," annoyed the Thuringian CDU board member Mike Mohring in the short message service.

For me, no real participation if the high-performance slotting machine "OL 1000 plus" is not used.

Union in dispute: Schäuble and Brinkhaus for quick decision on K question

Update vom 19.

According to participants, some speakers emphasized that they themselves were convinced of Laschet - that Söder was ahead in the party base's preference.

This could have given the impetus for Laschet's announcement that a district chairperson's conference would be convened soon.

Laschet vs. Söder: Will there be a secret vote in the CDU board?

Update vom 19.

Update from April 19, 8:48 p.m

.: In the question of the Union's chancellor, there is obviously actually a showdown by vote.

According to information from

ntv

, the K-question should be voted on in the evening.

The picture is not so much pro Söder as propagated by some of the speakers.

Nevertheless, it could be tight for Armin Laschet, which could make Markus Söder's statements in the afternoon interesting again: “If the CDU confidently makes a clear decision, then we will accept it.” Söder left open what a “clear decision” is .

It is still unclear when a result will be available.

Apparently the special digital session could last until midnight.

Kanzler-Frage: Betonung der Basis - auch Altmaier ergreit offenbar Partei

Update vom 19.

Update vom 19.

Update vom 19.
